Freddie Gibbs and Madlib return with Bandana, a follow-up to Piñata that makes the formula tighter rather than wider. Madlib’s beats dig deeper into old soul and vintage records, while Gibbs writes and raps with more force and more control. The album runs 46 minutes across 15 tracks, and it never wastes a bar.
From Obrigado to Massage Seats
The record opens fast. Obrigado is a 29-second table-setter, then Freestyle Shit shows Gibbs locking into one pocket after another over a warped loop. Half Manne Half Cocaine is where the album finds its teeth, Gibbs rapping about drug habits and staying alive with a plain honesty that never feels like a trick. Crime Pays, one of the tracks singled out by reviewers, pairs a lively Madlib beat with talk of money and street logic that plays almost like comedy. Massage Seats is a quick breather before the record turns serious again.
Palmolive is the first real display of what makes this album work. Guest verses hold up against Gibbs without burying him, and Madlib’s use of old records underneath sounds built for exactly these voices. Fake Names follows and might be the sharpest writing on the album, Gibbs weaving through fake identities and worry with real precision.
Flat Tummy Tea and the Back Half
Flat Tummy Tea is the main track here. It is loose, funny, and dead serious at once, and it is the track most reviewers point to first. Situations and Giannis keep the pace up, with Giannis turning a basketball reference into a boast about working harder than every other rapper in the room. Practice and Gat Damn are solid without asking for much extra notice, and Cataracts pushes the production into darker, more murky ground.
Education closes the album’s strongest run. It is dense, full of history, and one of the best pieces of writing Gibbs has ever put out. Soul Right ends things on a warm, quiet note, a rare moment of calm after so much strain.

Bandana does not try to beat Piñata by being bigger. It wins by being sharper. Madlib’s beats are stranger and more confident, Gibbs raps like he has nothing left to prove and everything left to say, and the full guest list never once pulls focus from the core partnership. Flat Tummy Tea, Fake Names, Education, Palmolive, Crime Pays, and Giannis are the tracks that will get played again and again, but there is no dead weight here. This is a rap album built to last.
