GTA 6 is just months away, and it will not be on Xbox Game Pass when it arrives.
Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto VI will not be included in Xbox Game Pass at launch, and the same goes for PC players. If you were hoping to play the game through a subscription rather than paying full price, Xbox Game Pass is not the answer.
Bad News for Subscribers
The news lands hard for casual players who wanted to avoid buying a $600 console just to play GTA 6. Xbox Game Pass will not be the workaround.
The subscription service gives players online console multiplayer access and a library of titles. The $22.99 per month Game Pass Ultimate plan includes more than 500 titles, including some launch-day games, and does not require an Xbox console. But GTA 6 will not be among the day-one offerings.
Not all games make it to Game Pass. Many popular titles eventually get added, but usually not from day one. That is the situation GTA 6 players now find themselves in: the game may arrive on the service someday, but not when it launches.
Zelnick’s 2022 Answer
Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, the parent company of GTA developer Rockstar Games, addressed the subscription question directly in 2022. Speaking at a GamesIndustry.biz live event, Zelnick made the company’s position clear.
“We’ve supported various subscription services and we’re happy to do so,” Zelnick said at the time. “Our scepticism has been around making frontline console products available day and date with subscription. That doesn’t make any sense to us, because economically speaking, we don’t think consumers are prepared to pay for that. And we can’t afford to turn our business upside down in a way that doesn’t make sense economically. There always has to be an intersection between what the consumer wants and what the publisher is able to do. And you know, it doesn’t make sense to do that for our properties.”
In other words, the company’s position has been on the record for years: frontline console products will not appear on subscription services on day one.
GTA 5’s Game Pass History
The good news for patient players is that GTA games have appeared on Game Pass before. Grand Theft Auto V, the predecessor to GTA 6, has been included in Xbox Game Pass numerous times over the years.
GTA 5 was available on Game Pass in 2020, 2021, 2023, and 2025. Each stint usually lasted a few months before the game was removed. The most recent run ended on April 15, 2026.
But the timeline matters. GTA 5 was released in 2013, and its first inclusion in Xbox Game Pass came more than six and a half years later. The game was close to seven years old before subscribers could play it through the service.
A Long Wait Ahead
That precedent does not bode well for anyone hoping to play GTA 6 on Game Pass anytime soon. The game will probably be added eventually, but the wait could be considerable.
The pattern for older games is different from new releases. GTA 5’s repeated appearances on Game Pass show that older titles do end up on the service. But those appearances came only after years had passed, and even then the game was removed after each stint of a few months.
November Cloud Gaming Limits
There is another wrinkle for players hoping to stream GTA 6 through Game Pass. Xbox Game Pass is going to impose strict monthly limits on cloud gaming in November, the same month GTA 6 is released.
The timing means even if the game were available through cloud streaming, players would face caps on how much they could play. The limits add another barrier for anyone trying to avoid buying a console.
Buying Is the Only Option
If you want to play GTA 6 at launch, the path is clear: buy the game outright and play on either an Xbox or PlayStation console.
There is no day-one subscription option. The game will cost $80 for those who pre-order, and it will require dedicated hardware to run.
For players who already own an Xbox or PlayStation, the decision is straightforward. For those who do not, the $600 console price tag is the entry fee. PC players are in the same boat: GTA 6 will not be in Game Pass on PC either, so a console is required to play at launch.
The question of whether GTA 6 will eventually join Game Pass remains open. Past behavior suggests it probably will, eventually. But “eventually” could mean years.
GTA 5’s first Game Pass appearance came more than six and a half years after its release. A similar wait for GTA 6 would be a long one.
The Bottom Line
Will GTA 6 be on Xbox Game Pass at launch? No. Not on console, and not on PC.
Will it be added later? Probably, based on the precedent set by GTA 5. But the wait could be long, and the November cloud gaming limits add extra complications.
For now, the only way to play GTA 6 when it launches is to buy it and play on console.
