Stephen Root has confirmed he is voicing a character in GTA 6, and he is thrilled about it. The actor, best known for his work on King of the Hill and the Oscar-winning horror film Get Out, told AP News that fans who have been speculating about his involvement were right.
“Yeah, you’re gonna see me in that,” Root said when asked about the fan speculation.
Root’s Confirmed Role
The confirmation comes after months of internet sleuthing following GTA 6’s first trailer. Fans had long pointed to Root as a likely candidate for the game’s cast, and now Rockstar has confirmed that speculation.
Root did not specify which character he is voicing, but he did offer some details about how the secret got out. “It’s coming out November 19th, is the latest I know of,” he said. “But, I think, from the first roll out of GTA that they were doing maybe almost a year ago, they had my character in there and there were too many people who knew me from King of the Hill and my voice. So, I think that secret got divulged then.”
That timeline suggests the character was visible early in the game’s development, and Root’s distinctive voice made him easy to spot. The actor’s own account points to the moment the character first appeared in promotional materials as the point when the secret started leaking.
The Brian Heder Theory
Fans have long speculated that Root might be playing Brian Heder, a “classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling” who is “still moving product through his boat yard with his third wife, Lori.” That description comes straight from Rockstar’s website, which explains Brian’s role in the game.

The game is currently running at 30 FPS, according to Rockstar. The studio has not yet confirmed whether a 60 FPS option will be available.
Rockstar has also confirmed that there will be no generative-AI or microtransactions in the game.

Root’s voice acting career is extensive. He has credits in King of the Hill, Rick and Morty, and Finding Nemo, where he reprised his role as a bubble-loving yellow fish. His Emmy-winning work on HBO’s Barry adds to a resume that spans television, film, and video games.
