Injustice Review: Superman’s Fall Drives a Solid, Spectacular Fighter

A tale of gods among us, wherein Superman falls and champions battle within a besieged city.

Champions of myth clash within a ruined city.

Injustice: Gods Among Us puts DC’s biggest names in a fighting game built for the arena, and the result lands somewhere between a spectacle and a solid fighting game. The 2013 release for PS3, Wii U and Xbox 360 trades the usual comic-book setting for a city under siege, and it mostly pulls off the trick.

Story Mode

The story follows a Superman who turns tyrant after being pushed too far, and it gives the roster a reason to fight each other. It’s a heavy-handed way to sell matches, but it works better than most licensed games manage. The voice work carries the weight, and the stage design changes with each fight.

Roster

The cast runs deep. Batman, Harley Quinn, Aquaman, The Flash, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern all get their own moves, and the mix keeps things fresh across a full set of matches. Few fighters feel alike, which is the kind of variety a roster this large needs to survive.

Fighting System

The fighting system rewards timing over button-mashing. Special moves need careful timing, and combos punish careless players fast. It’s a demanding mode, but it pays off once the timing starts to click.

Multiplayer

Online play holds up well, though it shows its age against newer titles in the genre. Matches run smoothly, and the roster means there’s always someone else playing a character you haven’t tried yet.

Look

The game pushes the hardware hard. Character models are detailed, and the city stages change around fights. It’s a polished look for its time, even if it doesn’t hold up against modern standards.

What Works Best

Here’s what stands out most:

  1. The story mode’s heavy focus on Superman’s fall
  2. A roster that rarely repeats itself
  3. Stage designs that change with each fight
  4. The look, which pushes the hardware hard
  5. Online play that still holds up today

What Falls Short

The story mode can feel rushed at times, and some characters feel less developed than others. The pace slows in places, and the game doesn’t always match its ambition with polish.

Final Word

Injustice: Gods Among Us isn’t perfect, but it’s one of the stronger fighting games of its generation. Its story mode gives the roster a reason to exist, and its fighting system rewards patience over speed. It’s a game worth returning to, even years later.
