Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event on Sept. 9 introduced a new iPhone lineup, new Apple Watches, and the AirPods 5. The software news wasn’t buried either. The company announced iOS 27, and it’s finally on the launch pad. Users with a compatible iPhone can download it Monday, Sept. 14.
The Download Date Is Set
Apple released iOS 27 alongside macOS 27 Golden Gate, iPadOS 27, and watchOS 27 this morning. If you have a compatible iPhone, the process is simple:
- Open the Settings app on your phone.
- Tap General.
- Tap Software Update and let the system check for new updates.
- When iOS 27 appears, download and install it.
You can also toggle “Automatic Updates” to “On.” That way, your phone will download the update automatically while it’s locked and charging.
What iOS 27 Actually Does
The headline feature is Siri AI. You can now talk to Siri like you would an AI chatbot, and it’s powered by Google Gemini. Siri AI will not be coming to Europe due to regulatory issues.
There are also new AI photo-editing features. One example is spatial reframing, which lets you remove unwanted details or describe the edits you want by voice or text. Android phones from Google and Samsung have had a full suite of AI editing tools for a couple of years, and Apple is finally catching up.
Smart photo editing will help users make the most of the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s new camera features. Apple also added new customization options for Liquid Glass, plus small updates to Health, Photos, and Notes.
Which Devices Get iOS 27
Not every iPhone can run the new OS. Here’s the full list of compatible devices:
| Device | Compatible |
|---|---|
| iPhone SE (2nd gen or later) | Yes |
| iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max | Yes |
| iPhone 12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max | Yes |
| iPhone 13, 13 Mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max | Yes |
| iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max | Yes |
| iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max | Yes |
| iPhone 16, 16e, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max | Yes |
| iPhone 17, 17e, iPhone Air, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max | Yes |
| iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max | Yes |
| iPhone Duo | Yes |
If your phone isn’t on that list, you’re out of luck. And if you live in Europe, Siri AI won’t be coming to your region.
What This Means for You
The update process is straightforward. Check for the update on Monday, and install it when it shows up. The automatic download setting means you can let the phone handle it while you sleep, as long as it’s plugged in and locked.
The photo-editing features are the practical draw. Being able to describe an edit to Siri by voice or text is a small change that could save real time. The camera improvements on the iPhone 18 Pro Max mean the new editing tools have somewhere to shine.
The regulatory issue in Europe is a real bummer for anyone over there. The feature will not be coming to Europe.
For everyone else, the download date is set. iOS 27 arrives Monday, Sept. 14. The list of compatible phones is long, and the new features are mostly about making the familiar iPhone do more.
The question is whether the AI chatbot and the photo editing hold up in daily use. That’s a test for the next few weeks.
