FOX’s medical dramedy Best Medicine is returning for a second season, and the cast is promising more small-town drama, a blood phobia monitor, and a mermaid. The show, based on the UK series Doc Martin, follows Dr. Martin Best (Josh Charles) in the coastal town of Port Wenn. Season 1 ended with Martin facing the possibility of losing his medical license after his assistant Elaine (Cree) took blood to help him manage his phobia. Now the cast is teasing what comes next, ahead of the September 22 premiere.
Martin’s Monitor Arrives
Charles warns that Martin starts Season 2 with a lot on his plate. He is still Port Wenn’s doctor, but he has to deal with Parker (Jack Cutmore-Scott), “a charming and friendly guy who comes to Port Wenn as Martin’s professional ‘monitor’ to oversee Martin’s medical compliance.”
“He doesn’t want [the blood phobia] being held over his head anymore,” Charles explains. Very early on in the season, Martin feels right about telling the town. Charles suggests Martin may literally yell, “I have a blood phobia! And now my entire medical career is in jeopardy,” which sounds cathartic.
The Maine State Medical Registry has launched an investigation into Martin. Eden, his ex (played by Eliza Coupe), is intent on helping him overcome his fear and return to Boston so he can receive “the respect”. Aunt Sarah (Annie Potts) worries that if Martin overcomes the phobia, “we might lose him.”.
Eden’s Return Is Complicated
Spencer reveals that Eden is shuttling between Boston and Port Wenn due to Louisa’s IVF journey, which means she and Martin are back together. Coupe has returned to town.
But the townspeople are not happy about the new visitor. Charles says Eden has rearranged Martin’s office and rubbed a lot of the town the wrong way. “They certainly don’t like what she’s brought back out in Martin,” Charles says. He adds that there is a connection between Martin and Eden, but it always feels slightly missing, unlike the bond between Martin and Louisa.
Aunt Sarah lets Martin and Louisa’s feelings for each other slip to Eden in the trailer. The footage then catches Eden looking displeased when Louisa has the mic at karaoke night. Trouble is brewing between them.
The Love Triangle Expands
Here is Charles and Spencer, urging you not to give up hope. They follow Martin and Louisa’s connection is “a big part” of the disconnect between him and Eden, Charles says. Spencer teases the fan-favorite duo: “That’, who represent the journey ahead: Will they make it? Or won’t they? The point is to watch two people and see what becomes of them.
But first, more drama awaits. There is a love square, or maybe a love pentagon. Mark’s feelings have not vanished into thin air, and FOX revealed that “much to Martin’s further annoyance, in addition to his constant presence, Parker ends up having sparks with Louisa.” Consider us sat!
Quirky Cases And Town Events
The season is built on unusual medical cases and strange events, and Season 2 offers plenty of both. Charles teases “some really interesting, quirky medical cases this year.”, and the trailer has him treating a mermaid (Ellen Soraya Nikbakht), who turns up in the premiere episode, “Be Careful What You Fish For.”.
“So many things go off the rails,” Spinella adds after the trailer mentions a neck-up amputation, three positive pregnancy tests from men, and more. Segarra promises “more crazy events in Port Wenn,” including a karaoke night at The Salty Breeze, feat. Mark belting another banger. There is also a big town lobster crate race to look forward to.
Andrea Martin Joins The Cast
Andrea Martin joins the show as Judith, Aunt Sarah’s quirky pal who “becomes yet another townsperson to test Martin’s patience.” When Judith’s smoking habits begin to affect her own health and the safety of the town, Martin and Sarah need to get involved.
Martin is a huge fan of the show, so much so that she reached out to Tuccillo with an email hoping to land a part on it, according to what Tuccillo told TV Line. With nearly 200 film and TV credits to her name, Martin’s resume includes Great News, Evil, the My Big Fat Greek Wedding movies, The Gilded Age, Only Murders in the Building, and Overcompensating.
“What’s beautiful about Season 2, is now we know all the characters,” Spencer reminds fans.
“Best Medicine Season 2: It’s the best,” Charles teases. “Put life aside for a little bit and watch the people in this town, because it’s part of the fun of it.”
The Season 2 Trailer
This article’s lead feature is a short audio piece that introduces listeners to some of the show’s main personalities. The clip runs three minutes and draws contributions from Charles, Spencer, Segarra, Spinella, Veasey, Potts, and Cree.
The story resumes right where the previous season ended. Martin finds himself at risk of losing his license, while Eden returns to town. Martin’s yell about his fear gets turned into a joke by Charles, while Spencer plays up the back-and-forth between two people who seem headed toward romance. The series understands its own identity: a cozy viewing experience built around odd medical situations, the warm feeling of a small town, and a doctor who can’t handle needles.
