Reid Scott is leaving Law & Order after three seasons, and the show is doing something unusual: letting viewers watch it happen on screen. The October 15 episode will be a “very personal” Riley-centric episode, according to executive producer Rick Eid, who spoke to TV Insider.
“We wanted to give him a memorable exit,” Eid said. “He’s a great character.” The approach comes with a surprising origin. “Honestly, I’d say interestingly enough, the genesis for the idea may have come from Reid himself.”
Scott plays Det. Vincent Riley, and his farewell will play out in the second episode of the season. The show has typically handled exits between seasons with a few lines of dialogue explaining what happened to the character. This time, viewers will see the goodbye unfold in real time.
The Brothers Riley
Riley’s brother Matt, played by Ryan Eggold, returns in the episode. Matt has been in a coma since last season, after being stabbed. Eid describes the relationship between the two as complicated, but rooted in real love.
“There’s real love there, and it’s probably mostly unspoken, but there’s a powerful bond between the two of them,” the EP said. “We’ll see that in this episode.”
The brothers’ history is full of tension. Eggold’s first episode ended with Riley arresting Matt. His second saw Matt get out of prison and be stabbed because he was going to testify for his brother’s case. From the hospital bed, Riley testified anyway and told Matt how proud he was.
“I don’t know that we had a master plan on it, but I think I just like the idea of two brothers that live totally opposite lives and who view the world in totally opposite ways yet still connect and love each other.”
Eid acknowledged the relationship’s friction. “But they have a hard time getting it right,” he said. “But underneath all the conflict and issues and resentments is a strong brotherly love.”
How the Episode Will Play Out
The premiere airs Thursday, October 8, at 10/9c on NBC. The show is entering its 26th season.
The episode promises emotion and power, Eid said. “I think it’ll be really emotional and powerful.”
The question now is how the show handles the goodbye. Will Riley walk away cleanly, or will Matt’s coma factor into the story? Eid’s comments suggest the relationship between the two brothers will be central to the episode.
Either way, it will be a departure worth watching. The show is giving the character a proper send-off, and it is letting the audience see it happen. That is a change from past exits, and it shows a willingness to treat a beloved character with care.
The episode will be a test of whether the show can hold the audience’s attention without its lead detective. Whether it succeeds depends on how well the writers capture the bond between the brothers.
