Luke Grimes has a simple reason for bringing Jimmy Hurdstrom back to Marshals: fans really wanted him. The actor explained the decision during a press conference previewing Season 2, and the answer is pure audience service.

Jefferson White, who plays Jimmy on Yellowstone, will reprise the role in a recurring capacity for Marshals Season 2. CBS announced the move on September 16, and the show’s premiere is set for Sunday, October 4 at 8:30/7:30c.

Grimes On Why Jimmy Returns

Grimes told TV Insider that the decision came down to one question: how to delight the audience. “Spencer and I have a lot of conversations about how to do that and try to come up with ideas for story and ideas that we feel like our audience would really enjoy,” he said. “Through those conversations, Jimmy came up.”

He framed the choice as a straightforward one. “It’s just a character that I think everybody loved so much,” Grimes added. “There are characters in Yellowstone you either love or hate or whatever, but I think universally everyone loved Jimmy, and personally, I just really liked working with Jefferson. He’s a great guy. Great to be around, good energy, great actor.”

The bottom line is that the show listened to its viewers. “And so it was just born out of, how do we delight our audience a little bit more this season and bring somebody back that everyone sort of misses?” Grimes concluded.

What Jimmy Will Actually Do

Creator Spencer Hudnut offered some details on where Jimmy lands. “Jimmy’s coming to East Camp. He’ll be spending time in Montana. He’ll be getting to know this team, this newfound family for Kayce,” Hudnut said. “We’re just super excited to keep adding. We have such a great roster of actors. It’s fun to just keep adding to that.”

The timing works out neatly. Jimmy left Yellowstone in Season 4 when he moved to the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas, then returned in the final season. Now he is back in Montana, where the Marshals team operates.

White’s Own Take

White shared his own excitement about the return. “I’m thrilled to dive into the world of Marshals and continue exploring the American West,” he said. “The cast and crew are stacked full of my favorite actors and filmmakers, and I’m honored to join them. Jimmy and I have been through a lot together, and I can’t wait to see what’s next for us.”

The Full Picture

Here is what the announcement established:

  • Jefferson White returns as Jimmy Hurdstrom in a recurring role for Marshals Season 2
  • The premiere date is October 4 at 8:30/7:30c on CBS

A Familiar Face

Jimmy started as a ranch hand with a troubled past. He evolved into a resilient, proud cowboy over the course of Yellowstone. Grimes framed the decision as a natural one. “How do we delight our audience a little bit more this season and bring somebody back that everyone sort of misses?” That is a refreshingly honest way to describe a creative choice.

The Marshals team is also expanding its cast with this addition. Hudnut noted that the roster is already strong, and bringing Jimmy in gives viewers a familiar face alongside new ones.

What Comes Next

The October premiere will show how Jimmy fits into the Marshals world. The show has also hinted at a potential crossover with the Dutton Ranch.

For now, the key facts are settled. Jimmy is back, and the show knows exactly why.
