Matt Berry, the actor known for What We Do in the Shadows, is now voicing a piece of flat-pack furniture in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. IKEA has teamed up with mod developer Kinggath Creations to release a free official Creation that turns the famous Kallax bookcase into a fully-fledged in-game companion. The add-on, called Kallax Storageborn, is available to download now through the Bethesda Game Studios in-game Creations menu.
The Creation is real, it is official, and it is exactly as strange as it sounds. Players can summon the talking storage unit using a custom Dragon Shout spelled AYE-KEY-YAH. Kallax Storageborn will carry your items, which should help anyone who has ever groaned at the dreaded “over-encumbered” message that slows the game to a crawl.
A Call to IKEA
The collaboration is not a one-off joke. Kinggath Creations has built a full quest around the bookcase, complete with two new IKEA-themed dungeons and a boss fight against a creature called the Clutter Golem. Players will also be able to wield a Dwemer Allen Key weapon, wear a Meatball Helmet, and eat meatball food items. It is a full expansion of the game’s world, dressed in the familiar colours of the furniture company.
IKEA’s reasoning is straightforward. The company sees Skyrim’s modding community as a natural fit for its expertise in storage.
“At IKEA, we believe in creating a better everyday life for the many people — and why shouldn’t that include their digital lives?” said IKEA executive Kemi Anthony in a statement. “Skyrim possesses one of the largest modding communities in gaming, and we saw a space where our expertise in functional storage could make a real difference in this fantasy world.”
Anthony also praised Berry’s contribution. “Matt Berry’s distinctive, legendary voice brings theatrics, booming authority and charm to the new Creation. In bringing Kallax to life we hope to not only make a meaningful difference for Skyrim players but doing so with a touch of added IKEA playfulness to delight gamers who’ve long been bogged down by too much stuff.”
The Voice Behind the Shelves
Berry is no stranger to video game work. His voice appears in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, where he plays Bane, and in the celebrated 2024 British indie adventure Thank Goodness You’re Here! His baritone is a recognisable instrument, and it carries a lot of theatrical weight, which suits a talking bookcase surprisingly well.
The actor has a busy schedule ahead. He is due to appear next year in both Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and A Minecraft Movie Squared. This year, he will appear as The Fish in a new Bill Hader-starring adaptation of The Cat in the Hat.
