Mazinger Z at 54: Still a Landmark of Anime History

A giant robot built by a grandfather to fight a mad doctor and his mechanical beasts, a tale of old Greece and a mobile island empire.

A towering mechanical robot stands upon a misty volcanic isle amid ancient ruins.

Mazinger Z premiered on Fuji TV in December 1972 and ran for 92 episodes through September 1974. It is the work of Go Nagai, who wrote and illustrated the manga while Toei Animation adapted it for television. The series follows Koji Kabuto, who pilots a giant robot built by his grandfather to fight Dr. Hell and his Mechanical Beasts.

Super-Alloy Z and Mt. Fuji

The robot is made of Super-Alloy Z, a fictional metal forged from a new element called Japanium mined from the sediment of Mt. Fuji. The premise is pure: a young hero, a giant robot, and a villain bent on world conquest.

Dr. Hell’s Origin Story

Dr. Hell’s origin is rooted in a strange archeological discovery. He was part of a Japanese team that found ruins of a lost pre-Grecian civilization on an island called Bardos, the Mycéne Empire. Among the finds were prototypes of steel titans about 20 meters tall, remote-controlled and powerful on the battlefield. Dr. Hell went insane, killed the other scientists, and kept only Professor Kabuto alive.

That origin gives the series a mythic scale.

The Underground Empire

Dr. Hell establishes his headquarters on a mobile island, forming the Underground Empire. His henchman, Baron Ashura, is described as half-man, half-woman. The show also features a second henchman, Boss, who is Dr. Sewashi. Count Blocken and Archduke Gorgon round out the supporting villains.

The Cast and Voice Work

Joji Yanami voices Professor Gennosuke Yumi, the grandfather who builds the robot. Minori Matsushima voices Sayaka Yumi, and Hiroya Ishimaru voices Koji Kabuto. Haruko Kitahama and Hidekatsu Shibata share the role of Baron Ashura. Hiroshi Otake voices Boss / Dr. Sewashi. Kosei Tomita voices Dr. Hell / Nuke. Isamu Tanonaka voices Mucha. Junpei Takiguchi voices Count Blocken. Koji Yada voices Dr. Morimori / Piguman. Nana Yamaguchi voices Misato. Osamu Kato voices Archduke Gorgon.

The Legacy of Mazinger Z

Mazinger Z is often cited as the first modern mecha anime. That claim is not exact, but the series did set a template. Its successors include:

  • Great Mazinger
  • UFO Robot Grendizer
  • Mazinkaiser

The series also had a theatrical sequel, Mazinger Z: Infinity, which took place ten years after the Great Mazinger series and was released on January 13, 2018.

How It Holds Up

The animation is dated. The designs are recognizable but not subtle. The story is episodic, with each episode centered on a new Mechanical Beast. The show is best enjoyed for its energy.

Mazinger Z is a landmark in anime history, and it deserves credit for that. Its influence is visible in nearly every giant robot show that followed.

Final Verdict

Mazinger Z is a historical artifact and a solid piece of entertainment. It is not a masterpiece, but it is important. The 92 episodes are a commitment, and the show delivers a consistent sense of adventure.
