The head coach personally reached out to Kevin Pietersen to bring him back into the England setup, according to Brendon McCullum, who said the former batter was at first certain the call was a joke.
The coaching group now includes Pietersen for the ODI and T20I duties building toward the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. The England and Wales Cricket Board announced the addition last week, and McCullum addressed it before England’s opening T20I against Sri Lanka on Monday.
McCullum’s phone call
The appointment drew attention because Pietersen’s history. In 2025, he questioned England’s readiness to play in the ODI series against India before the Champions Trophy, and he was especially harsh on how the team had handled the assignment.
McCullum says there is no lingering tension between him and Pietersen. He explained that he reached out to Pietersen about the role himself, and that his colleague’s initial reaction was one of disbelief.
“When I rang him the first time, I said, ‘Would you be interested in coming to work with England?’ He thought I was joking for a start,” McCullum told reporters. “And then he sort of mentioned, I’ve been quite critical of you guys in the past. I said, I have no problem with that, mate. There are parts of it I agree with, and there are parts I won’t agree with. And that’s fine.”
What McCullum wanted from Pietersen
The coach is not asking for a narrow focus on one particular skill. Instead, he wants the former batter to step back and take a broader look at the situation around him, questioning what has been accepted as true.
“He’s brought a ton of energy to the setup within the last 24 hours already,” McCullum said. “I’ve mentioned to him that I don’t want him to just try and be buried in one specific skill set either. I want him to look across the environment and setup, and challenge me privately on ways we can improve or things we can do differently.”
A relationship built on respect
McCullum said that even though they have had different opinions in the past, their relationship is based on mutual respect. He pointed out that they have been spending time together recently.
“It’s full of respect. We play against each other and we’ve enjoyed spending the time together over the last little while or two,” McCullum said. “I’m super excited to have him. I know he’s super excited to be here. The boys are buzzing, and I’m pleased that we can add such a strong resource to what’s already a very, very strong coaching staff of mine.”
McCullum answered directly when questioned about whether Pietersen’s hiring had come from him personally.
“Yeah, it was my idea,” he said.
Why McCullum picked Pietersen
Among the things that make Pietersen valuable to the England setup, according to McCullum, are:

- His capacity to provide a different point of view
Throughout his career, Pietersen has demonstrated a clear work ethic, and he gives himself entirely to whatever he is engaged in. McCullum believes that having someone who approaches things from a distinct angle carries no disadvantage.
England’s white-ball campaign ahead of the World Cup will see Pietersen bring his past experience working in a mentoring capacity with Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League into the national setup.
The appointment in context
McCullum is not looking for someone who agrees with him all the time. He is hiring an individual who has already questioned him in public and who will feel comfortable disagreeing with him behind closed doors.
The record of Pietersen’s playing career needs no defence. A number of players in the present England team recall watching him at his peak with admiration. His readiness to give himself wholly to a job is something already known, and his distinct way of approaching matters is precisely what McCullum has asked for.
McCullum’s hiring demonstrates he is willing to court controversy. The choice involves bringing on board someone who has openly challenged how England prepares for matches. That decision carries its own dangers. Yet McCullum has presented the move as a chance rather than a danger.
McCullum is aware that Pietersen strengthens an already strong coaching staff, and the England and Wales Cricket Board has confirmed the move.
Delhi Capitals have made a wise choice by hiring Pietersen. He arrives with a solid playing career and a proven record as a mentor within the franchise. His appointment adds fresh thinking alongside his established credentials.
Pietersen will be involved with the setup for the matches building up to the 2027 ODI World Cup, with England taking on Sri Lanka in their first T20I on Monday.
