Modders have found a workaround for the RTX 5090’s melting cable problem: they’ve ditched the new 12V-2×6 connector entirely and fitted the card with standard 8-pin power connectors instead.
The team at TecLab fitted three 8-pin connectors to the back of the RTX 5090’s PCB using hand-cut copper plates, then ran 24 cables (three sets of eight) to the front of the card. The results, they say, were cooler than the stock connector — and they’re calling on Nvidia to take notice.
“Where is Nvidia? Call Nvidia, guys,” the modders said in a machine-translated video. “Put the raw footage out there for people to see, otherwise they’ll think it’s a lie. This looks like a lie.”
Melting problems and a new approach
Melting GPU connectors have plagued Nvidia’s high-end cards since the RTX 4090 pushed the 16-pin 12VHPWR connector — now updated as the 12V-2×6 — to its limits. Numerous cases of melted connectors have been documented since then.
The 12VHPWR design was introduced partly to reduce the number of standard 8-pin cables needed. But TecLab’s mod suggests that the newer connector isn’t necessary for keeping things cool — and that the older standard may actually do the job better.
Test results and temperatures
TecLab unlocked the card to operate at higher power levels and put it through its paces. Even before pushing the card to its limits, the modders were impressed with the temperatures.
“It’s getting warmer. It’s still colder than a 12VHPWR connector,” they said. “It’s colder than the original connector, guys.”
The team got the GPU running over 3,300 MHz in the Port Royal benchmark with just two 8-pin cables — well above the stock RTX 5090 boost clock of around 2,400 MHz. With a single cable, they reached over 3,200 MHz.
That single cable did hit 91–92 °C, but there was still no melting to be seen.
Cables pushed past their rated spec
There’s a catch. The modders pushed the 8-pin cables beyond their recommended specification. Each cable has a rated limit of 150 W, which should mean a maximum power draw of 450 W total. The RTX 5090 has a TDP of 575 W.
TecLab argues the 150 W rating is overly conservative. “A connector that the industry determines is 150 W but actually it doesn’t have a firm specification,” they said.
Even pushed above spec, the 8-pin cables stayed stable and cooler than the 12VHPWR cable, the modders reported.
What Nvidia might learn
The point isn’t the overclock itself. It’s that TecLab pushed more power to the GPU than needed through fewer than three 8-pin cables — and the cables stayed cooler than the usual 12VHPWR connector.
Nvidia might not want to encourage exceeding the official 150 W spec for 8-pin cables. But when the alternative has documented melting problems, and 8-pin cables seem able to step up without issue — at least in this mod — the question is a fair one.
“Call Nvidia” indeed.
The modders’ footage is available to view in full, and they’ve urged skeptics to watch it. “Otherwise they’ll think it’s a lie. This looks like a lie.”
It’s a striking result from a single batch of tests with one card. Don’t try this at home.
But the broader point stands: the industry’s move toward the 16-pin connector may not have been the only path forward. If standard 8-pin cables can handle the load — and stay cooler while doing it — the case for the newer connector gets weaker.
For now, the modders have made their point. The cables work. They run cool. And they’re asking Nvidia to pay attention.
