Pokémon’s Legendary Bird Trio gets bold new redesigns for 30th Anniversary
To mark three decades of trading cards, Pokémon TCG is giving its most famous creatures a new appearance. The legendary trio of Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos, who first appeared in Generation 1, now wear revised designs by artist HYOGONOSUKE. These redesigns were shown earlier this week, before the official release of Pokémon TCG’s 30th Anniversary set on September 16.
All three cards in the new artwork share a bond that makes them a single unit. Each card’s attack accelerates its own Energy type, yet only under one condition: both other Legendary Birds must be present in play. This interlinked design adds a mechanical layer that goes beyond simple appearance.
The New Artwork From HYOGONOSUKE
The three decades of the trading card game are being marked with a special set called the 30th Celebration, and its main feature is a trio of redesigns for the Legendary Birds. HYOGONOSUKE is the artist responsible for giving each of those three birds its own new appearance.
Each of the trio carries identical health totals of 120 HP. The attacks they wield set them apart from one another. Moltres dishes out 130 damage. Articuno casts 30 damage upon every enemy Pokémon present. Zapdos hits with a massive 210 blow while absorbing 60 onto itself.
Each Legendary Bird will come in three separate editions for collectors to pursue, which adds up to nine distinct card designs spread across the entire release for Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. The three editions give each bird its own unique presentation within the same design framework.
Three Versions, Two Artists
Each version highlighted here carries coordinated artwork by HYOGONOSUKE, though each bird gets its own separate Illustration Rare illustrated by mashu. These versions keep the same basic gameplay found in their standard counterparts, merely substituting the regular artwork for elaborate full-card scenes.
Moltres 130/128, Articuno 132/128, and Zapdos 133/128 are the three separate Illustration Rares. Each of these numbers identifies the specific card within the lineup, distinguishing one edition from another.

Poster Collection Promos
The third set of designs comes from the 30th Celebration Poster Collection. Each foil promo card receives its own rendering. Krgc takes on Moltres. Taira Akitsu works Articuno. SIE NANAHARA illustrates Zapdos.
The expansion comes with the Poster Collection, which bundles together all three promos, three 30th Celebration booster packs, and a double-sided poster showing more than 160 cards from the set. The Poster Collection Legendary Bird Trio variants appear below.
A Long History Of Redesigns
These new versions of The Legendary Birds won’t come as a surprise to longtime collectors, since the cards have undergone several TCG redesigns before. Each generation has approached the trio anew, and this anniversary set follows that pattern.
The 30th Celebration set carries forward a tradition that began with Sword & Shield—Chilling Reign. That expansion treated each of the trio’s radically different Galarian forms to its own card. Before it, Hidden Fates had brought all three together on a single card: Moltres & Zapdos & Articuno-GX.
What The Set Actually Includes
The 30th Celebration set features several Legendaries. New cards include Ho-Oh and Lugia, Kyogre and Groudon, Reshiram and Zekrom, and Zacian and Zamazenta, among others. The set commemorates three decades of the trading card game with new Illustration Rares, returning cards in the Classic Collection, and 30 unique Pikachu illustrations.
The set’s official launch is September 16, 2026.
The Mechanics Behind The Design
What makes this reveal work is the way the three birds coordinate with one another. Every single bird builds up its own kind of Energy, yet only when both of the others are present on the battlefield does that building actually take place. Players therefore need all three birds out at once in order to see any real advantage from this system.
Here is how the three attacks break down:

Each member of the trio carries a separate job during a match, and their attacks reflect those roles. Moltres deals 130 damage, which is the largest single blow among the three. Articuno instead splits its damage between all opposing players. Zapdos delivers the strongest hit at 210 damage, though it bears 60 of the cost to do so.
A Decade Of Anniversaries
New sets tied to anniversaries have defined Pokémon’s recent history, and the 30th Celebration continues that trend by giving longtime TCG players reason to keep playing.
That history is reflected in the set’s design, which brings back classic cards while also adding new ones, and the Legendary Birds fit squarely into that tradition.
A fitting tribute to three decades of trading cards comes through these redesigns, which are bold, beautiful, and mechanically smart.
