Claymore is a dark fantasy series about a woman with silver eyes who fights demons with a sword. The anime adaptation, broadcast on Nippon Television from April to September 2007, packs 26 episodes into a tight, grim narrative that rarely lets the viewer breathe. It follows Clare, a Claymore warrior, as she travels with Raki, a boy whose family she saves after a demon attack.

Clare and Raki
Houko Kuwashima voices Clare, the lone woman with silver eyes who carries a sword and walks into a village to fight a demon. Motoki Takagi voices Raki, the boy whose family is killed in the first episode. Clare saves him and then banishes him from his home. With nowhere else to go, Raki follows Clare on her journeys across a medieval island plagued by Yoma, humanoid shape-shifters that feed on humans.
The Demon Hunters
Clare is a Claymore, a being created as half-human and half-Yoma. Her organization manufactures these warriors to exterminate the monsters for a fee. They wear armored uniforms and are called “Silver-eyed Witches” by the public, a reference to their silver eyes. The warriors are powered by Yoki, a demonic energy that allows shape-shifting and extreme strength.
When a warrior uses too much Yoki, she becomes a super-Yoma called an Awakened Being. The act of becoming an Awakened Being is likened to the feeling of sexual climax, and only female warriors proved able to resist it. Male Claymores ceased to exist entirely.
The Ranking System
Claymore warriors are ranked on their Yoki potential, strength, agility, intelligence, sensing and leadership. Warriors No. 1 through 47 are assigned to the island’s 47 districts. A warrior’s rank rises and falls according to her strength relative to others. It is unclear whether the strength comes from training or innate potential.
Most high-ranked warriors develop unique sword techniques, fighting styles or Yoki abilities. Examples include twisting the arm for a drill-like strike, unsheathing faster than the eye can see, or vibrating the blade so fast an enemy cannot track it.
The Story Arcs
The first arc introduces Clare, No. 47, and her companion Raki. The second arc flashes back to Teresa, warrior No. 1 of her era, and the young orphan girl she saves, who will later become Clare. Teresa dies at the hands of the Awakened Being Priscilla, and Clare vows revenge.
The series then moves forward to Clare’s time. The Slashers arc introduces Miria (No. 6), Deneve (No. 15), Helen (No. 22) and Galatea (No. 3). The Gravestones arc brings in Ophelia (No. 4). The Witch’s Maw arc introduces Jean (No. 9), Riful and Dauf. The Northern Campaign arc adds Flora (No. 8), Undine (No. 11), Isley and Rigaldo. Raki and Priscilla return as Clare prepares to take her vengeance.
Music and Sound
A CD soundtrack for the anime was released in July 2007. A CD of character songs using the voice actresses followed in September 2007. Both are tied to the series.
The Weight of It All
Claymore is not a cheerful show. It is about violence, loss, and the slow descent into something monstrous. The animation holds up well, and the action sequences are brutal and well-choreographed.
