MTV announced Wednesday (Sept. 9) that Nirvana will become the 2026 MTV Video Vanguard recipient, marking the first time a band has been honored with the award since Duran Duran in 2003.
The trio — Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl — will be recognized at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, presented on Sept. 27 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. It will be the first band to receive the award after it disbanded since The Beatles in 1964.
MTV’s announcement
The announcement was accompanied by a reference to a piece of band history on MTV’s Instagram post. The post tied the news to “This day in 1992, Nirvana took to the VMAs stage for the first time — shaping music, culture and MTV forever.”, which serves as a marker for the connection between the two.
A three-year VMA run
Three years in a row, Nirvana walked away with the best alternative video award at the VMAs. The band took home the prize for “Smells Like Teen Spirit” in 1992, then for “In Bloom” in 1993, and finally for “Heart-Shaped Box” in 1994.
Both “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Heart-Shaped Box” were nominated for video of the year but lost to Van Halen’s “Right Now” and Aerosmith’s “Cryin’,” respectively.

Broadcast details
The VMAs will air live coast-to-coast on Sunday, Sept. 27 (7:30-9:30 p.m. ET/4:30-6:30 p.m. PT) on CBS, simulcast on MTV and streaming on Paramount+ (Premium) in the U.S.
Paramount+ and MTV will make the show available to viewers around the world the following day.
Nominees for 2026
Nominations were revealed on Aug. 18, with Madonna topping the list at 11, trailed by Taylor Swift with nine.
Seven markers belong to Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter, with Bruno Mars, PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson each holding five instead.
The Vanguard honor lands decades after the band’s first VMA appearance.
