Practical Magic 2 Co-Stars Reveal How Much Kidman and Bullock Shaped the Sequel Behind the Scenes

Joey King and Maisie Williams reveal the unseen toil of Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock upon the awaited sequel, out this week.

Two actresses stand before a dim, ancient house, as though bound once more by a tale long unbroken.

Joey King is one of the biggest names in the cast of Practical Magic 2, the sequel that hits cinemas on 11 September. The film sees Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman return as Sally and Gillian Owens after 28 years.

King plays Kylie, one of Sally’s grown-up daughters, alongside Maisie Williams as Antonia. Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest also return as the aunts Frances and Jet.

Why the Sequel Is in the News

The cast has been talking to Digital Spy about the film ahead of its release. The big story is the unseen work Bullock and Kidman did as producers on the sequel. Williams and King praised their attention to detail in an exclusive interview.

“I feel like every single detail Sandra and Nicole have touched and looked at and agonised over and built,” said Williams. She added that the two stars were “attentive on set every day, watching scenes, giving notes.”

King echoed that. “It’s also just so special to see how much they care about this sequel, how much they want it to be so great for everyone who’s a big fan of this franchise,” she said.

What the Stars Said About Coming Back

Wiest said the return felt familiar at once. “Instantly, silk off a spool,” she told Digital Spy.

Channing described it in plainer terms. “We said, it’s like, we stopped shooting for a week and then we came back,” she said. She recalled walking on set with Kidman for the first scene with Bullock.

“It’s like, ‘Oh how you been the last 28 years?’ ‘Ups and downs, ups and downs’. I said, ‘Me too, ups and downs’ and that was it,” Channing said.

“There’s a shared experience that we all hold dear,” Wiest added.

The Producers’ Role

Bullock and Kidman both served as producers on the sequel. Williams spoke about what that meant for the newer cast members.

“So for us, coming to this new, we felt in really safe hands and we felt very encouraged by them,” she said. “It wasn’t just like, ‘Welcome and good luck’. They were attentive on set every day, watching scenes, giving notes… It’s very inspiring. I don’t know how [they] manage to wear all those hats.”

The pair’s hands-on work covered every part of the production. That included:

  • Details of the set and scenes
  • Watching performances daily
  • Giving notes to the cast
  • Building the world of the sequel

Channing on the Reunion

Channing described the return to Bullock and Kidman as immediate. “The first scene where it was with Sandy and Nicole, Nicole and I happened to be walking on set together,” she said.

“It’s like, ‘Oh how you been the last 28 years?’ ‘Ups and downs, ups and downs’. I said, ‘Me too, ups and downs’ and that was it. You just don’t go into it. Because that’s where our life was. I was there. I think we all four of us felt that way.”

First Reactions

First reactions have already landed, with the sequel being hailed as “perfection” ahead of the cinema release.

Release Date
