The wait for Professor Layton is nearly over. Following years of delays and a rising sense of dread among fans, Level-5 has set a release date for its puzzle-adventure game Professor Layton and the New World of Steam: Thursday, Dec. 10, 2026.
During September’s Nintendo Direct, the company confirmed the 2026 schedule is still on track, following an April trailer that had already done the same. Fans who watched the game slip from its original 2024 window have now ended a long stretch of silence.
The 13-Year Wait
The first new mainline entry in the series follows 2013’s Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, which closed out the Layton prequel trilogy on Nintendo 3DS.
Level-5 kept the series going between the games with spinoffs and crossovers. The professor stayed silent during that time, and hope started to fade.
What the Game Is About
Nintendo’s own announcement describes the setting as the dawn of the industrial age, and it is there that Professor Layton and his trusted assistant Luke return, following Luke sending the professor a letter.
A note leads Layton to Steam Bison, an expanding American settlement where strange events keep occurring.
The Road to 2026
The game’s announcement came back in 2023, with Level-5 revealing Professor Layton and the New World of Steam. The studio then said it would be arriving sometime in 2024.
The day arrived and was gone. After several years went by without fresh news, the audience grew doubtful and assumed the date would be put off once more.
The trailer for April confirmed that the 2026 release schedule was still intact, with the exact date now set in stone.
Platforms for the New Adventure
The game was announced for release during a Nintendo Direct, yet it is not tied exclusively to Nintendo hardware.
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will launch on:
- Nintendo Switch
- Nintendo Switch 2
- PlayStation 5
- Windows PC via Steam
A Sequel Era Begins
The publisher put out several spinoffs and crossovers between Azran Legacy and New World of Steam, among them Layton Brothers: Mystery Room, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, and Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy.
The professor’s story continues in a new installment, which takes up the main narrative and brings back the original pair of Layton and Luke.
Steam Bison’s Setting
This adventure centers on Steam Bison, a bustling American settlement marked by rapid development and strange occurrences.
That is exactly where Layton does his best work.
The Letter’s Call
A letter opens the tale, and it is through that missive that Luke draws the professor into the story, an invitation that sends Layton across the ocean to Steam Bison.

Fans will find that the year’s end has arrived sooner than they expected. The release date is no longer hypothetical; it is a confirmed fact.
The calendar holds Dec. 10, 2026, which marks the day the professor’s long-awaited answer arrives. That answer comes in response to the letter that began this journey, and it also sets a date for a meeting with Steam Bison.
