Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time set out to fit Robert Jordan’s sprawling book series into a television show. Developed by Rafe Judkins, the series ran for three seasons and 24 episodes, premiering on November 18, 2021, and ending on April 17, 2025. It was canceled in May 2025. The show has its moments, but the whole never quite holds together. Score: 5.5/10.

Rosamund Pike as Moiraine Damodred
The premise is strong. Moiraine Damodred, a member of the Aes Sedai, arrives in the secluded village of Emond’s Field in the Two Rivers. She seeks a group of four young people, believing one is the reincarnation of the Dragon, a channeller who could save the world from the Dark One or break it again. Rosamund Pike leads the ensemble as Moiraine, and she gives the show its clearest throughline.
The Young Cast Carries the Prophecy
The young cast carries the weight of the prophecy. Josha Stradowski plays Rand al’Thor, Madeleine Madden plays Egwene al’Vere, Marcus Rutherford plays Perrin Aybara, Zoë Robins plays Nynaeve al’Meara, and Dónal Finn plays Mat Cauthon, taking over from Barney Harris for the second season. Daniel Henney plays al’Lan Mandragoran. Later additions include Ceara Coveney as Elayne Trakand, Natasha O’Keeffe as Lanfear, and Ayoola Smart as Aviendha.

Renewals Before Premieres
Amazon renewed the series for a second season in May 2021, before the first season even premiered. A third season was ordered in July 2022, more than a year ahead of the second season’s debut. The show earned generally positive reviews from critics and a Saturn Award nomination. Then, in May 2025, it was canceled.

What the Show Gets Right
The casting is the strongest argument for The Wheel of Time. Pike anchors the Aes Sedai politics with real authority. The Two Rivers group has chemistry, and the show understands that the prophecy is a burden, not a prize.
Where It Falls Short
The problem is scale. Jordan’s books move through a vast world with dozens of factions. The show compresses that into eight-episode seasons, and the compression shows. Characters arrive and vanish. In this paper’s view, the Dark One never gathers enough weight, and the Last Battle never feels like the end of everything. The adaptation works in pieces, but the whole does not land.
Three seasons was not enough time. In our view, the cast and the premise could have carried the show longer. Amazon’s early renewals did not save it, and the cancellation in May 2025 cut the story short before it could reach its promised conclusion. That is the real loss here — not a bad show, but an unfinished one.
