Samara Weaving’s Wedding-Night Survival Game Still Cuts Clean at 90 Minutes

Ready or Not review: Samara Weaving fights a murderous wedding-night ritual in this 96-minute horror comedy that grossed $57.6M on a $6M budget.

A bride runs through a dim hall as masked figures in hunting gear close in behind her.

Ready or Not opens on a wedding night and turns it into a hunt. Samara Weaving plays Grace, a former foster child who marries into the Le Domas family, owners of a successful games company. Before midnight, Tony Le Domas explains that his great-grandfather Victor made a deal with someone named “Le Bail” to build the family fortune. The price is a tradition: every new member draws a card from Le Bail’s puzzle box. Grace draws Hide-and-Seek.

A Puzzle Box and a Speargun

The film, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from a script by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy, runs 96 minutes and is billed as horror comedy. The tagline is “A killer game of hide and seek,” and the premise holds to it. Grace believes the game is harmless. The Le Domases each take a weapon.

What she does not know, and Alex tells her, is the curse. If the new member draws Hide-and-Seek, the rest must find and ritually sacrifice them before dawn, or they die instead. The card was last drawn by Helene’s husband, Charles, who was found and murdered. That history is the film’s engine.

Grace Runs, the Maids Fall

Once the mansion locks down, Alex disables the security system so Grace can escape. Daniel, disillusioned with his family, finds her and gives her a head start before alerting the others. Emilie, Alex’s cocaine-addicted sister, kills a maid she mistakes for Grace. In the chaos, she kills a second maid. The butler Stevens blocks Grace’s escape.

The cast carries the farce. Adam Brody plays Daniel, Mark O’Brien plays Alex, Henry Czerny plays Tony, Andie MacDowell plays Becky. Melanie Scrofano is Emilie, Kristian Bruun is Fitch, Elyse Levesque is Charity, Nicky Guadagni is Aunt Helene, John Ralston is Stevens. Liam MacDonald and Ethan Tavares play Georgie and Gabe. The film premiered at the Fantasia International Film Festival on July 27, 2019, and opened in the United States on August 21, 2019, through Fox Searchlight Pictures.

Brian Tyler composed and conducted the score, his first collaboration with the directors. The film grossed $57.6 million worldwide against a $6 million budget and was nominated for Best Horror Film at the 46th Saturn Awards. A sequel, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, was released in 2026.

What the Ritual Actually Costs

The best decision in Ready or Not is that the family is bad at this. Emilie kills two maids by mistake. Daniel hands Grace a head start. The ritual is supposed to be a duty, and the Le Domases treat it like one, but they are incompetent and high and arguing with each other. That is funnier and meaner than a family that simply hunts well.

Weaving is the reason it works. Grace is not a passive bride waiting to be rescued. She hides, she runs, she fights back, and the film keeps her moving through the mansion’s locked rooms. The 96 minutes do not sag.

The weakness is that the film explains itself too early. Once Alex lays out the curse, the mystery is gone, and what remains is a chase. The chase is good. It is not surprising. The comedy and the horror sit side by side rather than blending, and the kills that land hardest are the accidental ones, because the family’s incompetence is the real joke.

The ending, which the source does not spoil here, is the film’s sharpest turn. It is worth noting that the movie earns it by keeping the rules consistent: the card, the deadline of dawn, the consequence for failure.

A 6.4 Out of 10

Ready or Not is a tight, funny, well-cast horror comedy that knows its premise and does not overstay it. The $57.6 million gross against a $6 million budget says audiences agreed. The Saturn nomination says the genre press noticed. It is not a great film, and the early exposition costs it tension, but it is a good one, and Weaving makes Grace worth following.
