Rodeo Houston has broken ground on a $300 million agricultural complex called “The Farm,” a new space that will sit about three miles from Reliant Park along State Highway 288. The project was announced Thursday during a groundbreaking ceremony in South Houston.
The 1-million-square-foot facility is designed to serve as a permanent home for livestock and horse show activities, agricultural education, youth programming, volunteer engagement, and community events throughout the year. It is expected to open in time for the 2029 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
The Farm’s Design and Purpose
The Farm is described as a premier equestrian destination, with an emphasis on horses. That focus is central to the project’s stated goals. The facility will also host year-round activities beyond the rodeo season in March, serving as a destination for agriculture, education, and community.
“This facility will serve as a year-round destination for agriculture, education and community, ensuring our mission continues to grow and benefit Texas youth for generations.”
Chris Boleman, president and CEO of Rodeo Houston, made that promise.
A Long Road to Completion
The Farm is scheduled to open for the 2029 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. That timeline puts the project on track to mark a significant milestone for the organization.
Mayor John Whitmire said he is expediting the permit process for the new facility. That support from city hall is notable, given the scale of the development.
Wesley Sinor, chairman of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, said the new space will be used for generations to come. He framed the groundbreaking as a reflection of the organization’s commitment to building a world-class facility.
“As we move toward our centennial, the groundbreaking of The Farm reflects our commitment to building not only a world-class facility, but a stronger future for Texas youth and agriculture,” Sinor said.
