Scary Movie 2 has one good idea and no idea what to do with it. The 2001 Dimension Films release, directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, swaps the first film’s slasher targets for haunted-house movies across five decades. That is a bigger, stranger playground. The film runs 82 minutes and never builds anything in it.
Its tagline promised as much: “No more mercy. No more shame. No more sequels – honest! – We lied.”
The script carries six credited writers — Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans, Alyson Fouse, Michael Anthony Snowden, Craig Wayans and Greg Grabianski — plus Dave Polsky.
It opens at Hell House, where teenager Megan Voorhees is possessed by Hugh Kane, the mansion’s cruel previous owner. Her mother’s dinner party collapses; two Roman Catholic priests, Fathers McFeely and Harris, arrive to help. James Woods and Andy Richter play them.
The exorcism fails. McFeely pulls a gun and shoots Megan.

Cindy and Ray Try College
A year later, Cindy Campbell, Ray Wilkins, Brenda and Shorty Meeks are on campus, attempting new lives after the first film’s events. Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans all return as characters who had been killed off.
Cindy and Brenda get tagged by socially maladjusted Alex. Shorty is unchanged. Ray, still confused about his sexuality, has two new male friends, Tommy and Buddy. Buddy pursues Cindy; she declines and offers friendship instead.
Oldman’s Sleep Paralysis Lie
Professor Oldman and his charming paraplegic assistant Dwight Hartman want to study paranormal activity at Hell House. They recruit Cindy and her friends as test subjects, claiming the study concerns sleep paralysis. Tim Curry plays Oldman; David Cross plays Dwight.
The deception is the plot’s only engine, and it barely runs. Nobody investigates anything. Nobody discovers the lie. The mansion simply becomes a room where sketches happen in sequence.
Polly, Hanson, and a Bad Dinner
At the house, Cindy meets Polly, a foul-mouthed parrot, and Hanson, a caretaker with a badly malformed hand. Chris Elliott plays Hanson. Kathleen Robertson’s Theo, described as attractive, joins the group later.
Dinner falls apart because of Hanson’s repulsive handling of the food. Everyone loses their appetite. The scene exists to gross out the audience and then stop.
Kane, a Diary, and Mr. Kittles
Cindy hears voices and follows them to a secret room. She and Buddy find the diary of Kane’s wife and notice Cindy’s slight resemblance to her portrait. Christopher Masterson plays Buddy.
Meanwhile Kane has sex with Alex, played by Tori Spelling, and leaves the moment commitment comes up. Cindy fistfights the house cat, Mr. Kittles.
The Parody Targets, Listed
The film goes after The Haunting (1999), Stigmata (1999), The Exorcist (1973), The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), The Amityville Horror (1979), Poltergeist (1982), The Legend of Hell House (1973), both House on Haunted Hill versions, The Changeling (1980), What Lies Beneath (2000) and Bloodbath at the House of Death (1984). It also spoofs Dude, Where’s My Car? (2000), Hannibal (2001), Hollow Man (2000) and Charlie’s Angels (2000).

Why the References Don’t Land
Here is the failure. The Exorcist and Poltergeist share a register — dread, built slowly. Charlie’s Angels and Dude, Where’s My Car? share a different one — silliness, played fast. Scary Movie 2 needs both to sit inside the same comic frame, and they don’t.
So the film defaults to recognition. A viewer spots The Haunting, spots Hannibal, and gets the small pleasure of having spotted it. That is not a joke. It is a quiz.
The gross-out material has the same problem. Hanson’s food handling and the cat fight are loud, but they are disconnected from the movies being mocked, which means the parody and the comedy are running on separate tracks for most of the runtime.
The Exit That Says Everything
Scary Movie 2 grossed $141 million worldwide against a $45 million budget. Reviews were largely negative, and Metacritic scored it 29/100. A sequel, Scary Movie 3, followed in 2003 without Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans or Keenen Ivory Wayans.
That gap is the detail worth weighing. Scary Movie 2 was the last in the series to feature the three of them until Scary Movie (2026). The source does not say why they left, and the film’s own credits offer no explanation.
The money says audiences showed up anyway. The reviews say the material had run thin.
