A modern chef wakes up in a Joseon queen’s body, and the result is one of the sharpest Korean dramas of its run. Mr. Queen aired on tvN from December 12, 2020, to February 14, 2021, and it earns an 8.5/10.

Jang Bong-hwan Falls Into a Pool
Mr. Queen opens in the present day. Jang Bong-hwan is a head chef at the Blue House, a womanizer with a free spirit. His life breaks apart over a fish hook.
A Chinese delegate bites into food Bong-hwan cooked and pulls out a fish hook. After a near-death experience and a fall into a pool, Bong-hwan wakes in the body of So-yong, Queen Cheorin, in the Joseon period. Shin Hye-sun plays Queen Cheorin. Kim Jung-hyun plays King Cheoljong.
The switch is the engine of the whole series. It is also the joke that keeps paying off.
Queen Sunwon Holds the Real Power
King Cheoljong is gentle and easy-going. He is also a figurehead. The true power sits with Queen Sunwon, the widow of the late King Sunjo, played by Bae Jong-ok.
Bong-hwan wants to go home. His plan is to win Queen Sunwon’s favor by cooking for her. Kim Tae-woo plays Kim Jwa-geun. Seorina plays Jo Hwa-jin. Na In-woo plays Kim Byeong-in.
Cooking as a path to survival is a clever choice. It turns the palace into a kitchen with higher stakes.
So-yong Has a Secret
Bong-hwan soon learns that So-yong has a secret. He also learns the King is not what he seems. Cheoljong has a dark and suspicious side, and he wants to be a king who helps his people.
That second discovery is where Mr. Queen stops being a comedy about a man in a dress. The show is based on the Chinese web series Go Princess Go. It was directed by Yoon Sung-sik and created by Park Kye-ok and Choi A-il.
The genre listing — Drama, Comedy, Sci-Fi & Fantasy — is accurate but incomplete. The fantasy is the door. The drama is what happens after.
Shin Hye-sun Carries Both Bodies
Shin Hye-sun has the hardest job in the cast. She plays a queen with a modern man’s soul inside her, and she has to sell both without letting either swallow the other. She does it.
Kim Jung-hyun has the quieter task. Cheoljong must read as harmless and then as something else, and the turn has to land without a wink. It does.
The supporting cast fills the palace with people who matter. Cha Chung-hwa plays Court Lady Choi. Chae Seo-eun plays Hong-yeon. Kim In-kwon plays Manbok. Yoo Min-kyu plays Yeong Pyeong-gun. Lee Jae-won plays Hong. Jo Yeon-hee plays Queen Shin-jeong.
Twenty Episodes, One Season
Mr. Queen ran for one season and 20 episodes on tvN, airing every Saturday and Sunday at 21:00 KST. It premiered December 12, 2020, and closed February 14, 2021.
The finale reached a nationwide rating of 17.371%, with more than 4 million in viewership. That makes it the eleventh highest rated drama in Korean cable television history. It also set a record for tvN as the network’s fifth highest rating.
Those numbers came despite controversy. The show drew objections during its run. The ratings held anyway.
Palace Politics Slow the Middle Stretch
Here is the part worth watching. Mr. Queen works because it never treats the body swap as a gag it can coast on. Bong-hwan’s cooking is not decoration. It is how he moves through a palace where he has no rank, no allies and no way back.
The show’s best trick is that the King’s secret and the Queen’s secret run on parallel tracks. Both characters are performing a role for the court. Both are hiding what they actually want. That symmetry is what lifts Mr. Queen above the usual swap comedy, where the premise runs out by episode six.
Twenty episodes is a long commitment, and the middle stretch leans on palace politics that move slower than the central pair. That is the cost of the structure.
The Fish Hook Is the Whole Show
The controversy is the noise. The rating is the signal. A drama that reaches 17.371% and more than 4 million viewers in its final week did something right, and it did it while carrying a premise that should not have held for 20 episodes.
What Mr. Queen gets right is tone. It is funny without being weightless, and it is serious without losing the joke that started it. The fish hook, the pool, the queen’s body — all of it lands because the show knows exactly how much to explain and how much to leave alone.
Shin Hye-sun is the reason to start. The King’s secret is the reason to stay.
