SPAM turns Snorlax, Ditto and Charmander into actual food items in its latest Pokemon collaboration

A tale of SPAM and Pokemon, wherein three towers of meat and stickers rise above the market, and the hungry multitude cries out for more.

By mitch·3 min read
Three towers of SPAM, each adorned with a Pokemon visage, stand upon a counter amid a throng of eager buyers.

Pokemon has joined forces with SPAM for a strange food partnership featuring collectible sets built around Snorlax, Ditto, and Charmander. The collaboration was made with South Korean food company CJ CheilJedang as part of Pokemon’s 30th anniversary celebrations. It turns the country’s familiar SPAM gift sets into three bright “SPAM Towers” styled after the popular characters.

What Each Box Holds

The cost of each tower is ₩19,900, which works out to roughly $15 USD, and it includes five 200g cans of SPAM Classic along with Pokemon stickers. Customers who purchase all three editions receive one of two limited-edition plush keychains as part of their order. The two designs feature either Snorlax or Ditto holding a can of SPAM and a bowl of rice.

Resale Prices Already Up

All three towers together carry a total cost of ₩59,700, which works out to roughly $45. A single seller has posted the whole set on eBay, asking close to $88, more than twice what it originally cost.

How the Sets Got Out

KakaoTalk Gift made the Pokemon sets available on September 9, while CJ The Market received them on September 11. E-Mart is also expected to carry the collection, even though no wider release dates have been confirmed yet.

A Tradition in Korea

While canned meat may seem like an unusual present for a holiday, in South Korea it has turned into a customary choice for giving at major festivals like Chuseok and Seollal.

Other Food Partnerships

Krispy Kreme has already brought out six character-themed doughnuts, and now KFC Singapore has followed with its own big crossover. It includes special food, gaming chopsticks, and a $99 Charizard jacket.

McDonald’s Precautions

Pokémon also tied up with McDonald’s for a promotion centered around collectible items, which were safeguarded against price gouging through built-in measures. Given that the SPAM sets were already showing up at higher prices, such protections might well have been worth imitating.

What This Says About Collectibles

The secondhand push has already begun, with the collections selling quickly. Below is a look at how the prices measure up:

  1. A single SPAM Tower costs ₩19,900, or about $15 USD.
  2. The complete three-character collection costs ₩59,700, or roughly $45.
  3. One seller has listed the full set on eBay for around $88, nearly double its original price.

The difference between what something originally cost and its price on eBay demonstrates how fast demand can push up a product’s value. These sets first appeared on September 9 via KakaoTalk Gift, then arrived at CJ The Market on September 11. E-Mart is expected to join next, even though no wider release dates have been announced yet.

Once the sets went on sale, the secondary market started moving fast, and that momentum has become established. The question of whether prices continue to rise rests entirely on demand for the items themselves — the plush keychains and the SPAM cans.
