Nintendo Switch Sports arrived on April 29, 2022, as the first true Wii Sports sequel in nearly a decade, and it does the obvious thing well: it puts a Joy-Con in your hand and asks you to swing. The game sold over 18.32 million copies by March 2026, which tells you the pitch worked. What it does not tell you is whether the pitch holds up after the first week.

Spocco Square and the Eight Sports
Nintendo Switch Sports is set in Spocco Square, a fictional multisport facility. Six sports shipped at launch: tennis and bowling, carried over from Wii Sports; chambara, the swordplay mode from Wii Sports Resort; and three new events in football, volleyball, and badminton.
Golf was announced for launch and did not make it. Nintendo issued it as a free update on November 29, 2022. Basketball, last seen in Wii Sports Resort, was announced during the June 2024 Nintendo Direct and arrived as a free update on July 10.
That is eight sports total, and the spread is the point. Players position the Joy-Con the way they would hold a racket, a bowling ball, or a sword. The gyroscope inside the controller reads the motion.
What the Joy-Con Actually Does
The motion controls are the whole game, and they are also the whole problem. Bowling rewards a controlled release. Tennis rewards spin. Chambara rewards timing. When the gyroscope tracks cleanly, the illusion holds and the sport feels like the sport.
When it does not, you are standing in a room waving a plastic controller at a television. Nintendo has never solved this completely, and Nintendo Switch Sports does not solve it either.
The Leg Strap and the Update Schedule
The physical copy includes the Leg Strap accessory introduced in Ring Fit Adventure. It works in Football, and at launch it worked only in Football Shootout Mode. The Summer update in July 2022 opened it up to all Football match types.

Sportsmates, Miis, and Who You Play With
Alongside Miis, Nintendo introduced new avatars called Sportsmates. They have more detailed hair and faces, plus arms and legs. It is a small change that makes the square feel less like a museum of 2006.
Multiplayer supports up to four players locally on one system. Online allows up to two local players to team with friends and take on random matchmaking over the internet. The online ceiling of two is the sharpest limit here. A four-player living room works; a four-player party across two houses does not.

Where the Eight Sports Land
Development started shortly after the Nintendo Switch launched. Director Yoshikazu Yamashita and his team were asked to build a Wii Sports title for the new hardware. Most of the team had never worked on a Wii game.
You can feel that in the sports themselves. Volleyball and badminton are the strongest additions because they are fast and readable. Bowling remains the anchor. Golf, when it finally arrived, was worth the wait and not worth the seven months.
Chambara is the odd one. Swordplay without a sword is a gesture, and the mode never quite escapes that.
The Verdict on Nintendo Switch Sports
Nintendo Switch Sports is a good party game and a thin solo one. The eight sports are uneven, and the reviews were mixed for exactly that reason. Some events carry a session; others get played once.
The sales figure of over 18.32 million is not evidence of quality. It is evidence of a title that shipped on the right console at the right moment with the right name. The free updates are the more honest signal: Nintendo kept adding to this game for two years because the launch version was not finished.
That said, the core idea still works. A Joy-Con in your hand, a ball to curve, a friend on the couch. Nintendo Switch Sports does not need to be more than that, and mostly it is not.
