Slimes are the weakest monster in every fantasy game ever made. A blob with no arms, no legs and no face should not carry a 96-episode franchise across four seasons.
It does. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime premiered on October 2, 2018, and ran through September 11, 2026. Eight Bit produced it. It is a cornerstone of the isekai genre, and the reason is simple: it cares more about building a country than winning a fight.

Satoru Mikami Dies in Tokyo
The first episode does its work fast. Satoru Mikami is 37, a corporate worker in Tokyo, and he is almost content with his monotonous life. He does not have a girlfriend. He is not a hero.
Then a casual encounter with a colleague goes wrong. An assailant tries to stab his friend. Satoru pushes the friend out of the way and takes the blade himself.
While he is dying, a voice echoes in his mind and asks him a series of questions. His answers earn him gifts and powers for the next life. He wakes up in an unfamiliar world as a slime.
The show does not linger on the death. It gets to the joke, then moves past it.
Rimuru Meets Veldora in the Cave
The slime takes the name Rimuru after a chance meeting with Veldora, a Storm Dragon sealed for 300 years for reducing a town to ashes. Rimuru feels sorry for him. They exchange names, and Rimuru picks up the surname Tempest.
The skill that makes this work is called Predator. It lets Rimuru devour anything and mimic its appearance and skills. Rimuru eats the dragon and his prison together to analyze the seal and eventually free him.
Later, Rimuru gains a human form after devouring a deceased human named Shizue Izawa. That is the mechanic that lets a faceless blob sit at a negotiating table, and the show uses it well.
A Power Vacuum in the Great Forest of Jura
Veldora’s disappearance leaves a power vacuum. That vacuum is the engine of the whole series. Beings across the Great Forest of Jura accept Rimuru as their ruler, and together they build the nation of Tempest.
Rimuru’s strength, wisdom and idealistic vision make the new nation grow fast in strength and influence. Nearby foreign powers take notice. Diplomacy follows. So does trouble.
This is where That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime separates itself from its peers. Most isekai series hand their protagonist a sword and a grudge. This one hands Rimuru a population and a budget problem.

The Voice Cast Carries the Tone
Miho Okasaki voices Rimuru, and the performance has to hold two registers at once: the calm administrator and the former office worker who still thinks like an employee. Tomoaki Maeno voices Veldora, the sealed dragon who becomes an ally rather than a threat.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime earns its place as a cornerstone of isekai because it understood something its imitators did not. A reincarnation story is only interesting if the new life is worth living in. Rimuru does not want to win. Rimuru wants a world that is welcoming to all races, and the series treats that goal as a real political project with real costs.
That is why the slime works. Not because it is powerful, but because it is in charge.
