The Resident ran six seasons on Fox and never became the show its premise promised. It premiered January 21, 2018, as a mid-season replacement, and ended January 17, 2023. Fox bought the project from Showtime in 2017 and ordered a 14-episode first season. The premiere aired as a lead-out to the Vikings-Eagles NFC Championship Game. In April 2023, the series was canceled.

Matt Czuchry Walks Devon Pravesh Through Day One
The pitch is clean. Matt Czuchry plays Conrad Hawkins, a senior resident who guides idealistic young doctor Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal) through his first day at fictional Chastain Park Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. The show pulls back the curtain on modern medicine, the good and the bad.
Chastain’s Staff Kept Turning Over
The cast rotated constantly. Malcolm-Jamal Warner recurred in the final three episodes of season one, then was promoted to series regular for season two as AJ Austin. Jane Leeves joined for season two as Kit Voss. Jessica Lucas came aboard in season four as Billie Sutton. Original cast member Shaunette Renée Wilson was written out.
Bruce Greenwood’s Randolph Bell Carries the Critique
Bruce Greenwood’s Randolph Bell — first cast as Soloman Bell before the name changed — anchors the show’s critical eye on the healthcare industry. The series wants to indict the business of medicine. It mostly settles for speeches.

Andrew McCarthy Joins a Crowded Later Season
Later seasons added Andrew McCarthy as Ian Sullivan and Kaley Ronayne as Kincaid Sullivan. None of it fixed the central problem: a medical drama that wants to be about systemic rot but keeps returning to the same cases.
Where the Show Actually Lands
The cast is competent. Czuchry carries the lead, and Greenwood gives Bell real weight. The Atlanta setting and the hospital’s internal politics give the writers material. The execution rarely matches the ambition.
The Resident is a middling procedural dressed as a critique. Six seasons and 107 episodes is a real run. But the writing never trusted its own argument enough to sit in it. The result is watchable and forgettable.
