Brentford moved up to third in the Premier League with a 3-0 win over Chelsea, and the difference-maker was Igor Thiago. Goals from Jaidon Anthony, Thiago himself and substitute Fabio Carvalho sealed the result, extending Chelsea’s winless run to three matches.
A long spell without scoring came to an end for Thiago, who found the net at the death. His exuberant reaction seemed to release something from him, both his joy and his Brentford jersey. The Brazilian international had been chasing goals all afternoon, putting in plenty of effort yet unable to break through. That changed when he finally delivered.
Thiago’s Return
Thiago’s goal came after a quiet first half in which he missed Brentford’s best chance early in the second. The celebration spoke for itself. For a man who had gone four games without scoring, the relief was visible.

Brentford’s Full Performance
The goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher did not face any serious tests between the posts. Michael Kayode made a couple of careless passes and showed little inclination to push forward. Kristoffer Ajer was a considerable figure at the back, even when faced with crosses and set-pieces.
Schuster shone inside his own penalty area yet appeared uneasy in possession, sending a backpass so long it nearly resulted in an own goal. He later provided the assist for the winning goal. Lewis-Potter’s clearance went wrong in the 10th minute, leaving Neto with a chance, but he was strong on the counter-attack, drawing on experience after moving into the left-back position from his former attacking role.
In the 37th minute, Yehor Yarmoliuk, making his 100th appearance, unleashed a powerful long-range effort and later produced Brentford’s best opportunity just after half-time. Vitaly Janelt put an early stop to a Cole Palmer dribble, coming close to conceding a penalty, while also providing a physical presence in midfield with a potential Germany debut looming under new manager Jurgen Klopp.
Until Mikkel Damsgaard delivered an incredible whipped corner that led to the opening goal, he was not at his usual level from set-pieces or shooting from distance. Kevin Schade played a part in the final two goals, produced several pressure-relieving dribbles and had a shot blocked in the first half.
Chelsea’s Response
Chelsea’s defence wilted. Maxence Lacroix won the majority of his duels against Thiago but gave the ball away for Brentford’s second goal and missed a clear chance in the dying moments. Levi Colwill was quiet after being left out of the England squad.
Cole Palmer was clearly Chelsea’s standout performer, with most of their attacking moves passing through him. Yet he failed to deliver the decisive moment he wanted, as his free-kick was comfortably saved and he had few other obvious chances. Danny Welbeck created an opportunity for Neto, though he did little to make up for the loss of injured striker Joao Pedro, who came off at the 72nd minute.

What It Means
Thiago’s goal was the difference. Chelsea’s substitutes did not make much impact, with Josh Acheampong and Geovany Quenda coming on without changing the course of the match.
The victory secures Brentford’s place in the top three, while for Thiago it marks an end to a dry spell that had clearly been weighing on him. His face did the rest of the talking.
