Tom Cruise told Jimmy Fallon that Taylor Swift schooled him on football, and the exchange is exactly as delightful as it sounds. During an appearance on The Tonight Show to promote his new film Digger, Cruise explained why the singer’s seat next to him at the Chiefs’ season opener was the highlight of his night.
The game drew a crowd of celebrity watchers. Swift, 36, shares the family suite with fellow stars when she attends Kansas City Chiefs games to watch her boyfriend, then fiancé and now husband Travis Kelce. But this week’s Monday Night Football clash against the Denver Broncos brought a guest nobody expected: Tom Cruise, 64.
Fallon asked the obvious question: what do the biggest movie star in the world and the biggest artist in the world talk about when they sit next to each other? “She was schooling me on football,” Cruise replied with a smile. “For real?” Fallon said. “For real,” Cruise confirmed.
“She was bringing the football. First of all, she’s a genius. I’ve been following her since she was a kid.”
Cruise said he and Swift also discuss music and movies, and he praised her “great sense of humor.” He went further, calling her “a brilliant writer also, by the way. Brilliant musician and director. Very skilled.”
The Football Lesson
Cruise’s story about Swift’s football education starts with her admission. Before meeting Kelce, she knew “nothing” about the sport, according to Cruise. That changed after she met Kelce, whose older brother Jason Kelce is a retired NFL great.
Cruise related a tale about Taylor asking Travis what it was like playing against Jason. Both men play on the offensive side of the ball, so they would not have had a chance to tackle each other on the field.
“She said, ‘You know, he’s so patient,'” Cruise laughed. “I said, ‘I’m sure he was.’ I think everybody would be very patient [with her] … [Now] she knows … she’s just bringing it.”
A Long-Awaited Return
Cruise said he had not been to a football game since pre-COVID, where he was working and could not attend. Getting to hang out in the suite was “a lot of fun.”
He also noted that Swift and Kelce’s friends are “a beautiful couple and magical in their own right. Everybody there in that booth.”
Cruise was among the hundreds of celebrity guests at Swift and Kelce’s wedding in July at Madison Square Garden in New York.
What They Actually Chatted About
| Topic | Who Raised It |
|---|---|
| Football | Swift schooled Cruise |
| Music | Not addressed in the interview |
| Movies | Not addressed in the interview |
| Humor | Cruise praised Swift’s |
The table shows what Cruise actually said. He did not say what Swift specifically talked about beyond football. He praised her wit and her work across music, writing and directing.
Cruise also attended one of Swift’s Eras Tour shows in 2024. He has followed her since she was a kid, he said.
The exchange is a small moment with a big audience. Fallon’s question was simple, and Cruise’s answer was generous.
What stands out is not just the football lesson. Cruise praised Swift’s sense of humor and her work across music, writing and directing. He called her “a brilliant writer also, by the way. Brilliant musician and director. Very skilled.”
Swift knows her stuff, and she knows football now. That much is clear from Cruise’s account.
