The record opens quietly. Things Left Unsaid drifts in on keyboard sound before It’s What We Do settles into a steady, familiar rhythm, one of the tracks that earns its place through patience. Ebb and Flow closes the first part in under two minutes, more transition than song.
The second part picks up with Sum, a strong piece built around guitar that stands as one of the album’s better moments. Skins and Unsung pass quickly, brief sketches rather than full ideas. Anisina adds a new sound to the mix and closes the part on a moving note, one of the few tracks here that feels finished rather than put together.
Talkin’ Hawkin’ Stands at the Center of the Middle Side
This is where the album loses focus. The Lost Art of Conversation, On Noodle Street and Night Light run together in short pieces, none longer than two minutes, each a mood rather than a full composition. Allons‐Y (1) and Allons‐Y (2) sit on either side of Autumn ’68, a rare moment of real energy, guitar and organ pushing against each other instead of just sitting side by side.
Talkin’ Hawkin’ stands as this part’s high point and the album’s most striking track, built around a spoken voice and a rising instrumental build that gives the record one of its few real payoffs.
Louder Than Words Closes It Out
Calling and Eyes to Pearls keep an easy pace, more atmosphere than substance. Surfacing gathers a little energy heading into the finish.
Louder Than Words closes the album as its only proper song with words, and it carries the weight of being the last thing Pink Floyd will put out as a band. It does not reach for a big finish. It just says farewell.
Eighteen Tracks, One Tribute
Eighteen tracks set across four parts, and still the record feels thin. Twelve of the tracks carry a shared writing credit tied to the band’s late keyboardist, and the album plays like a tribute to him first, a Pink Floyd record second. That aim is admirable. It does not make for a strong listen from start to finish.
The trouble isn’t ambition. It’s the lack of it. Pink Floyd built a name on reaching for something bigger than the songs themselves — Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Wish You Were Here all had shape and purpose. The Endless River has neither. It has texture, and texture alone isn’t enough to carry nearly an hour of music.
Critics were split. Some praised its quiet mood; others called it thin, without new direction. Pitchfork argued that the smaller scope was bold but that the record still sounded like a step back for the band, with nothing new to say and no new ground to try.

Sum, Anisina, Allons‐Y and Talkin’ Hawkin’ show what the band could still do when the pieces came together. Louder Than Words gives the whole project a graceful last line. But too much of the record drifts without direction, and eighteen short pieces don’t add up to the best of Pink Floyd’s work.
This is a quiet, careful farewell from a band that once shaped popular music. It just does not have much new to say on the way out.
