Twitch CEO Dan Clancy has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI Online will launch next year, even though Rockstar Games has not officially announced it yet. In an interview with Bloomberg, Clancy said he spoke with Rockstar about the company’s plans for the game and how it could affect streamers.

“We spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans, and also helping them think about how they can engage our creators,” he said. “You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer.”

The Single-Player Release

Grand Theft Auto VI launches as a single-player title on November 19th. That means anyone who wants to play the game with other people will need to keep logging into the current version of Grand Theft Auto Online. The new GTA 6 multiplayer mode has not been confirmed, let alone dated.

What Clancy Said

Clancy’s comments suggest he is working closely with Rockstar on the game’s rollout. He framed the GTA 6 multiplayer launch as something that will follow the single-player release, and he positioned it as the main event for streamers.

Rockstar’s Position

Rockstar has not confirmed the multiplayer mode, but the company’s parent, Take-Two, has promised continued support for GTA Online. In a statement to shareholders, Take-Two said, “we will continue to support GTA Online after [the] GTA 6 release and beyond.”

What This Means for Players

The takeaway is simple: if you want to play with others, you are stuck with the current GTA Online until next year. That is a long wait for anyone who has been playing the series together.

Our View

Clancy’s framing is amusing. He is selling the GTA 6 multiplayer launch as the main event, which is a clever way of positioning the game’s real draw as something that hasn’t even launched yet.

It is a smart move for Twitch, which relies heavily on the GTA Online community. But it also raises questions about the launch strategy. Why split the single-player and multiplayer releases across two separate dates?

Clancy’s comments suggest the company is confident enough to treat the multiplayer launch as the main event.

For now, players will have to wait. The single-player release is November 19th, and the multiplayer mode is expected to follow next year.
