Tyler Perry has explained why Janet Jackson is missing from the new Netflix movie Why Did I Get Married Again? — because of her Las Vegas residency.
The film, written and directed by Perry, began streaming on Netflix on Wednesday. It is the third movie in the comedy-drama franchise, which originally followed four couples who have been best friends since college. In the new installment, the group reunites for the wedding of Angela and Marcus’s daughter, Jasmine (Armani Greer), and introduces a new generation of friends led by Taraji P. Henson.
Three of the original couples return: Dianne and Terry (Sharon Leal and Tyler Perry), Angela and Marcus (Tasha Smith and Michael Jai White), and Sheila and Troy (Jill Scott and Lamman Rucker). Richard T. Jones is back as Mike.
Janet Jackson’s role in the franchise
Jackson played Dr. Patricia Agnew in the first two Why Did I Get Married movies. Her character is a psychologist married to Gavin, an architect played by Malik Yoba. Patricia and Gavin were one of the four college friends at the center of the original story.
Jackson does not appear in Why Did I Get Married Again—not even in a cameo. Yoba is also absent from the new movie. Viewers may remember that Gavin was killed off at the end of the 2010 sequel, Why Did I Get Married Too.
How the movie explains her absence
Patricia’s absence is addressed early in the film. Angela laments that Pat is not coming to her daughter’s wedding, and Marcus says Patricia is “busy” on a “lecture tour.”
Angela then suggests the real reason: Patricia is still grieving her husband’s death, as well as the death of her son, who died before the first movie and would have been the same age as Jasmine.
What Perry said about Jackson’s schedule
In an interview with The Culture Creators, Perry said Jackson could not make time for the movie because of her residency in Las Vegas.
“Janet, at the time, she was doing residency in Vegas,” Perry said. “So we couldn’t work out the time. But who knows what will happen in the future.”
The timeline raises questions. Jackson’s Vegas residency wrapped on September 20, 2025. According to the website Production List, the first day of production on Why Did I Get Married Again was September 29, 2025.
The timing gap
That leaves just nine days between the end of the residency and the start of filming. Something isn’t quite adding up — why couldn’t she manage even a quick cameo in that window?
The possible explanations are speculation. Pre-production likely began while Jackson was still in Vegas, which may explain the conflict. Perry may not have offered the salary she wanted. Or she may simply not have felt like returning.
What we don’t know
The real reason is not confirmed.
Perry’s explanation is the only one on the record, and he left the door open for the future. “Who knows what will happen in the future,” he said.
