A woman recounts a first date with an investment banker who grew increasingly rude and patronizing throughout the evening.

A woman sits uncomfortably at a restaurant table during a disappointing first date.

Colette, who posts as @glencocopuff on TikTok, says the worst date she ever had kept getting worse instead of better. In a caption titled “Woman Says First Date With Investment Banker Kept Getting Worse: ‘It Just Keeps Getting Worse and Worse,'” she describes a date who was patronizing, rude, and disrespectful throughout their evening together — and then insisted on seeing her again anyway.

At the moment of writing, the caption had gathered 10,800 likes and 1,071 comments. Colette set up her account of events by explaining that she had connected with the date through text messages ahead of their first meeting, and that she had expected the evening to be pleasant. Her hopes, however, were dashed from the very start, as the date showed up with what she described as a large ego.

The Ego That Wouldn’t Stop Talking

According to Colette, the evening began when he complained about colleagues at his workplace whom he felt were beneath him. She described him as frustrated with their conduct, adding that he appeared to want her to inquire about his occupation. She declined to do so, yet he ultimately revealed that he worked in investment banking.

According to Colette, he assumed she didn’t know what investment banking was. She said she was annoyed but didn’t want to continue the conversation.

The inquiry then turned to when she had relocated to the city, and she replied that it had happened recently, adding that she still did not’s when things got uncomfortable, she said, because he told her he refused to date people who were new to the area because they didn’have a well-established community there yet.

Colette said the comment made her roll her eyes.

China, Language, and the Intelligence Test

Colette said her date only got worse from there. He talked about living in China and shared stories about his time there. She said he came across as boastful when he mentioned that he spoke Chinese.

She told him that when she asked which Chinese language he spoke — Mandarin or Cantonese — he appeared surprised that she could tell the difference between the two.

Despite her familiarity with China and its culture, she said the interaction left her feeling as though he viewed her as unintelligent. She eventually said she called him out on his behavior.

Why Colette Called It Out

She said she felt disrespected by his decision to agree to a date after learning she had recently moved to the city. The information was part of her dating profile, she noted, and she had not kept it from him.

Colette said she had posed questions to him drawn from details on his profile, yet he seemed not to have looked at hers. He is reported to have described himself as a “straight shooter,” though she said she was not impressed by it.

She said the behavior followed a clear sequence: he assumed she knew less than him, acted superior, and kept talking without stopping.

What Commenters Said

The discussion centered on the conduct that Colette described, with commenters addressing it directly. One person confessed they were drained merely from hearing the account and responded, “Let’s normalize leaving dates after 5 minutes.”. A separate commenter wrote, “He sounds immature as hell.”.

Some people described their own bad dates, including instances where they wished they had walked away sooner.

Comparing the Two Dates

Detail Colette’s Experience Commenters’ Reaction
Date’s behavior Patronizing, rude, disrespectful Exhausted, calling him immature
Interaction quality Constant assumptions about her knowledge Normalizing leaving early
Outcome Date insisted on seeing her again Suggested leaving after five minutes
Setting A first date Shared stories about bad dates

The Pattern of the Evening

  1. The date complained about coworkers and wanted her to ask what he did for a living.
  2. He assumed she didn’t know what investment banking was.
  3. He refused to date people who were new to the area.
  4. He boasted about speaking Chinese without knowing the difference between Mandarin and Cantonese.

The date kept going from bad to worse at each stage. Colette summed it up with a single judgment: it was rude, disrespectful, and patronizing, yet she still wanted to see him again.

The Daily Dot could not confirm the circumstances of the date detailed in the TikTok caption through its own independent investigation. All the particulars about the date and the exchanges with the man come from Colette’s own account posted on TikTok alone.
