TikTok adds an AI shopping assistant and one-click checkout so users can buy from the For You feed

TikTok adds an AI assistant and one-click checkout, letting users buy from the app's feed without leaving.

TikTok has built an AI assistant into its app so you can ask it about a product and buy it in one tap. The company announced Monday that its Shopping Assistant and a new checkout feature are rolling out now, and the move puts the app right in the middle of a question a user might otherwise ask Google or OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The assistant, described by TikTok as a conversational AI agent, understands context and remembers a user’s preferences across a conversation. It offers real-time guidance on product details, shipping, sizing, availability, and completing a purchase. The checkout feature lets users buy directly from a brand with one click, starting from the app’s main For You feed.

What the assistant actually does

TikTok says the assistant is built with partners including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza, and Stripe. The company frames the pairing of the assistant and checkout as a way to keep users inside the app when they have questions about a product, rather than turning to outside AI tools like ChatGPT.

The idea is simple: a user sees a product, asks the assistant about it, gets an answer, and completes the purchase without ever leaving the feed. TikTok’s hope is that the assistant becomes the place people ask product questions, not a search bar or a separate app.

Why this matters for TikTok’s business

TikTok Shop, the app’s in-house marketplace, has been the main engine for the company’s e-commerce ambitions. But these new features broaden the approach beyond the existing shopping hub. Instead of relying on TikTok Shop to drive purchases, the social network is now integrating shopping tools more directly into the broader app.

The expansion comes as TikTok’s influence on shopping continues to grow. The company’s own Economic Impact Report, released last week, found that activity on the platform helped generate $81 billion in GDP for U.S. businesses, while 54 million Americans said they had purchased a product after watching a TikTok video.

TikTok Shop launched in the U.S. in September 2023. eMarketer estimates it generated about $15.8 billion in U.S. sales in 2025, representing roughly 18% of all U.S. social commerce.

The bet behind the assistant

The assistant’s success depends on a wager that users who start asking questions about a product will finish buying it in the app, without ever leaving for a competitor’s search results. That is a big assumption, and it is the whole story.

“It offers real-time, AI-powered shopping guidance, such as product details, shipping information, sizing, availability, and help completing a purchase.”

Whether users actually ask the assistant questions instead of searching elsewhere is unproven. The assistant is available now, and the checkout feature is live alongside it.

TikTok is betting that friction — the moment between seeing a product and buying it — is enough to change where people shop. Whether it works depends on whether users trust the assistant more than they trust a search engine.
