NHL 19 wants to take hockey back outside. EA Vancouver built the game around pond rinks and outdoor play, then tied the whole thing to a single progression system called World of CHEL. It came out on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 14, 2018, the 28th entry in a series that has been skating the same sheet for decades.
That combination — nostalgia for the pond, a modern reward loop, and over 200 legends — is the pitch. It mostly lands.

World of CHEL and the Create-A-Character Hub
The headline mode is World of CHEL, a hub that folds the returning Create-A-Character modes into one reward system. You design a player, then earn custom gear, equipment and more than 900 apparel options. The list runs past pads and sticks into lifestyle clothing: hoodies, jackets, winter knits.
New player classes and player traits sit on top of that. The claim is freedom — look, feel and play the way you want. In practice the classes do more work than the clothes. A winger built for speed plays nothing like a defenseman built to absorb contact, and the traits let you nudge that further.
The customization number is the one that gets quoted. It is also the one that matters least. Nine hundred apparel items is a catalog, not a game.
Real Player Motion Tech and Bigger Hits
The skating runs on Real Player Motion Tech, or RPM Tech. EA promises explosive-edge skating, faster acceleration and more responsiveness. The improvement is real and it is incremental — the kind of change you feel in the first period and stop noticing by the third.
The collision physics system is the louder addition. Hits land bigger and harder, and the game leans into them. Whether that reads as jaw-dropping or as a physics engine showing off depends on how much you enjoy the contact.
What RPM Tech does not fix is the sense that NHL 19 is a refinement, not a rebuild. The skating is better. The hitting is bigger. The foundation underneath is the one you already know.
Wayne Gretzky and the Legends Roster
The legends roster is the strongest single feature here. NHL 19 lets you compete with and against more than 200 of the greatest players in the sport’s history, and Wayne Gretzky is the name at the top of that list.
Gretzky also appears on the cover art for the ‘Ultimate’ and ‘Legends’ editions, shown in an Edmonton Oilers sweater. The standard cover belongs to Nashville Predators defenseman P. K. Subban. Patrik Laine of the Winnipeg Jets and William Nylander of the Toronto Maple Leafs appear on editions for other markets.
Stacking an all-time roster against current players is a fantasy the series has leaned on before, and it works again. Gretzky on the ice is the selling point, and the game knows it.

The NBC Graphics and a Closed Server
One detail dates NHL 19 more sharply than any roster. It was the last year the NHL on NBC graphics package and score bugs appeared in the game. That presentation layer is gone from later entries, and its absence is a small marker of how fast sports games shed their skins.
The bigger marker is the online servers. EA shut them down on November 7, 2023. Any mode that depended on them is now a menu screen with nothing behind it. World of CHEL’s reward loop, built to run on connection, is the part that suffers most.

What NHL 19 Gets Right
The pond setting is not a gimmick. Taking the game outdoors changes the feel of a match in a way that a stat bump never would, and World of CHEL gives that change somewhere to live. Pairing it with a single reward system instead of scattered mode-specific unlocks is the right call, and the player classes give the customization actual weight.
The legends roster is the other clear win. More than 200 historical players, Gretzky among them, is a genuine draw for anyone who has followed the sport longer than the current season.
Where NHL 19 falls short is ambition. RPM Tech improves skating without changing how the game thinks. The collision system adds force, not intelligence. And the 900 apparel options are a number designed for a back-of-box bullet, not for a player deciding what to wear.
The score sits at 7.9 out of 10. That is the right place for a game that does several things well, one thing memorably, and nothing that resets the series. NHL 19 is the best version of the hockey EA was already making. It is not a new one — and with the servers dark since 2023, the outdoor experiment is now a closed rink.
