Monster Hunter Wilds Ascendance brings back Teostra — and the game may finally fix its reputation for being too easy

Monster Hunter Wilds' Ascendance expansion brings back Teostra with a tougher fight and a new Boost Bracer system.

An Elder Dragon named Teostra breathes flames and sets off explosions as it dives toward hunters.

Capcom has shown the first proper look at the Monster Hunter Wilds Ascendance expansion, and the headline act is a returning monster whose fights were always a test of patience. Teostra, the fire-breathing Elder Dragon first seen in Monster Hunter 2, is back — and this time Capcom appears to have made his attacks even more punishing.

The trailer, released today at Tokyo Game Show, shows Teostra in action. The beast dives, explodes, and breathes flames, and the footage suggests Capcom has added new tricks to his arsenal. Players who remember the last time Teostra appeared, in Monster Hunter Rise – Sunbreak, will know the drill: the dragon’s signature move sends him diving toward hunters while setting off multiple blast novas. Now, Capcom has given him charging follow-ups as well, meaning a hunter who dodges one blast may find themselves chased into a wall or sent flying by a massive, angry lion.

Fire-Breathing Returnee

Teostra first appeared in Monster Hunter 2 in 2006, on the PS2. His love for blast effects and flame breath pushed the hardware hard at the time, and the trailer shows that the beast still chews up bitrate. The footage is impressive, but the question is whether the performance holds up in the actual game.

The trailer is only three minutes long, but the real fight will likely take ten times that in real-time. The footage is compressed, but the signs are clear: Teostra is back, and he looks harder than ever.

Boost Bracer System

Capcom is introducing a new item called the Boost Bracer. The system builds energy by staying aggressive with attacks, then activates Boost through a special Boost Driver attack or other unique actions per weapon. “Boost enables abilities such as new combos and enhanced attacks, allowing you to seize control of the powerful threats that await you,” Capcom explained previously.

The key question is what this new mechanic will actually let you do. One guess is that it could allow players to boost into Teo’s blasts, dodging the first hit, negating the second, and then letting loose with a juiced-up combo while the beast recovers from his onslaught. Whether that works in practice remains to be seen.

Addressing The Easy Complaint

One of the core complaints about Monster Hunter Wilds from launch was how easy it was, especially compared to previous games in the series. Capcom has been working on this since the game launched, and the new expansion seems to be part of that effort.

If you played the Final Fantasy 14 crossover that introduced Omega Planetes, you’ll be familiar with this new, improved difficulty. That fight was not easy. Capcom has also announced several refinements to improve the gameplay experience, including faster weapon swapping without the use of a Seikret mount, and changing equipment outside the tent with the Item Box.

These improvements will also be available in the base game, according to Capcom’s video description for the trailer. The company says the expansion will launch in 2027, but no specific date has been given yet.

New Tools And New Fight

The Boost Bracer system rewards aggression. The new system appears to encourage hunters to stay aggressive and build energy through combat.

Whether this makes the fight easier or harder is an open question. The teaser suggests that perfect dodges and perfect blocks will be essential, and the charging follow-ups mean simply avoiding a blast may not be enough. The combination of a tougher fight and better evasion tools could create a more satisfying challenge.

The trailer also shows that Capcom has made some improvements to how the game runs since launch. The explosion-heavy attacks push the bitrate in the footage, but the company has made decent improvements to performance overall. The hope is that the trailer’s technical demands don’t reflect what players will see in-game.

What Comes Next

Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance launches in 2027, and players will finally get to hunt Teostra again. The expansion will be available on Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

The Switch 2 version launches on 4th December, giving players who want more Monster Hunting goodness something to look forward to before the full expansion arrives. The base game will also receive the weapon-swapping and equipment-changing improvements, so players who have already bought the game won’t be left behind.

The teaser stands as a reminder of why Teostra remains one of the most memorable monsters in the series. His explosions, his dives, and his sheer power make him a force to be reckoned with, and the new expansion looks set to bring that fight back to its fans in a bigger, more demanding package.

The teaser has done its job: it has made players curious about what comes next.
