A common reaction to drinking alcohol is turning red, and many people consider it a harmless trait. But a medical student of East Asian descent who wrote this opinion piece wants doctors to take it more seriously. These individuals might not be discouraged from continuing to drink, despite their alcohol use being tied to an increased risk of heart disease, brain disorders, pancreatitis, and cancer, especially cancer of the esophagus. Those who inherit two non-working copies of the gene, called homozygotes, tend to avoid alcohol altogether due to extremely unpleasant reactions when they consume it, which makes them less likely to develop cancer.

East Asians often notice that they flush after drinking alcohol, yet may not grasp the dangers behind the reaction. Providers should spot patients who flush from alcohol and advise them on the consequences for their health. Basic surveys about prior flushing episodes, along with ethanol patch testing in certain settings, have demonstrated the ability to detect ALDH2 deficiency with notable accuracy.
Alongside inquiries about alcohol consumption and family background, these instruments may also be worked into standard questioning on personal history.
A Campaign That Misses the Mark
A recent marketing push for Nectar, the canned hard seltzer and cocktail brand, has drawn criticism. The company ran an AAPI Heritage Month campaign asking people to view the alcohol flush reaction as an “Asian Glow Up.”. The aim was likely to transform a cause for shame into a viral beauty moment. However, by failing to add a disclaimer about the health risks, the campaign promotes a story that encourages more drinking among a population that is already vulnerable and under-informed.
The promo’s caption on Instagram was written as “Sharing drinks with friends before so you can share your glow with everyone after.”.
According to the author, ads like these should present the reality behind “Asian glow” to young people as useful information rather than as a lecture. The argument is that such knowledge could preserve their agency and help them make more informed choices.
