Sean Gunn has declared himself retired from playing Rocket Raccoon, the motion-capture role he took on for all three Guardians of the Galaxy movies. The actor made the announcement on a recent episode of The Brandon Davis Show, explaining that age has finally caught up with his feet.
“I am retired from playing Rocket,” Gunn said. “Since I’ve turned 50 a couple of years ago, I don’t think I could do the motion reference anymore for Rocket. I think I’m too old.”
The Motion Reference Job
Gunn’s job was not voicing Rocket. That belonged to Bradley Cooper. Gunn’s task was far more physical: he stood in for the animated raccoon on set, moving through scenes in ways that let animators map his performance onto the character.
“It hurts after a while,” he said.
The work demanded constant movement. Gunn described himself in a catcher’s crouch, pivoting repeatedly on his points of contact with the ground.
Feet and Ankles, Not Knees
Gunn said the strain showed up in his feet and ankles, not his knees. He pivoted a lot, and over time, he thinks it affected his physiology.
“Everyone thinks it’s my knees, but it’s really my feet and my ankles.”
The Years of Pivots
Gunn did the motion reference for Rocket in all three Guardians of the Galaxy movies. The first film premiered in 2014, with the sequel following in 2017 and the third installment arriving in 2023.

Gunn also appeared on screen as Kraglin Obfonteri across several films. He played the character in Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Avengers: Endgame, Thor: Love and Thunder, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
A Retirement That May Never Come
Gunn noted that nobody has asked him back yet. He made the announcement on his own terms.
