Record’s Jesus is a massive, sprawling biblical telenovela that runs for 196 episodes. It is the fifth such production from the network, and it follows the life of Jesus from his birth in Bethlehem to his crucifixion. Created by Paula Richard and directed by Edgard Miranda, the show stars Dudu Azevedo as Jesus, Cláudia Mauro as Maria, and Mayana Moura as Satanás. The series premiered on 24 July 2018 and ran until 22 April 2019.
Maria and the Birth of the Prophesied Child
The story opens with a young woman from Bethlehem named Maria receiving a miraculous announcement that she will bear the Son of God. She gives birth to the Messiah, and she and her husband José try to raise Jesus with values and good principles. The prophecy troubles mad king Herod, who persecutes the family in an attempt to kill the child. Maria and José raise Jesus as an ordinary young man, far from his mission.
Twelve Apostles and Their Betrayal
Over the years, Jesus begins to understand his role and travels through Judea, now under Roman rule, carrying teachings of peace and equality. He gathers twelve apostles, including Pedro, André, Tiago Maior, João, Filipe, Natanael, Tomé, Mateus, Tiago Menor, Judas Tadeu, and Simão Zelote. The envious and susceptible Judas Iscariote eventually betrays him.
Female Followers and Demonic Possession
Several female followers join the group, including Maria Madalena, a Jewish Hellenist widow who suffered from demonic possession for years. She believed she was saved in the arms of the Roman centurion Petronius but found true liberation in Jesus and became his most steadfast disciple.
The Cast That Carries the Weight
| Character | Actor |
|---|---|
| Jesus | Dudu Azevedo |
| Maria | Cláudia Mauro |
| Satanás | Mayana Moura |
| Judas Iscariotes | Guilherme Winter |
| Petronius | Fernando Pavão |
| Pedro | Petrônio Gontijo |
| Barrabás | André Gonçalves |
| Anás | Paulo Figueiredo |
| Adela | Adriana Garambone |
| Ana | Talita Castro |
| Cláudia | Larissa Maciel |
| Herodes Arquelau | Alexandre Slaviero |
The ensemble is large, and the show asks each actor to hold their own over hundreds of hours. Dudu Azevedo carries the center of the story as Jesus, while Cláudia Mauro plays Maria with warmth and strength. Mayana Moura’s Satanás is a standout performance, giving the devil a presence that rivals Jesus himself.
A Story Built for Scale
The show is built for scale. It covers the entire life of Jesus, from his birth to his crucifixion, and it does so at a pace that allows for deep dives into individual stories. The show’s structure — 196 episodes across a lengthy run — means it can spend significant time on individual stories, building out the world of Judea and the Roman occupation.
The show treats the miracles as genuine events rather than allegory, which gives the production a grounded quality even when it deals with supernatural elements.
What Works and What Doesn’t
The show is not subtle about its message. It is a telenovela, after all, and it plays to the conventions of that form. Long speeches about faith and sacrifice are delivered with theatricality, and some viewers will find the pacing slow, especially in the middle sections where the show spends significant time with Jesus as a young man learning his role.
But the show’s strengths outweigh its weaknesses. The performances are consistently strong, the production design is rich, and the storytelling holds attention across its vast runtime.
Our Verdict on Jesus
Jesus is a telenovela that takes its subject seriously. It is not a small-scale production, and it does not try to be. It is a big, loud, emotional telling of the life of Jesus, and it succeeds at that. The cast delivers, the direction holds the pace, and the story stays engaging even when it stretches across nearly two years of television.
The show is a triumph of ambition. It asks for a large investment of time from its audience.
