A woman in Minneapolis has spent years gathering over 1,200 copies of Wedding Crashers, the 2005 comedy, and now she is putting them back into circulation one box at a time. Sable Adelaide, from Minneapolis, Minnesota, found 25 DVD copies of the film on sale at a secondhand store for 25 cents each. She bought them all, filled a shelf, and then asked her roommate to pick out a movie as a joke. That $6.25 practical joke grew into a full collection, a P.O. Box, and a citywide distribution plan.
How the Collection Began
Adelaide told Racket that she decided to open a P.O. Box after so many people wanted to send her their copies. A man from Poland would send 40-70 copies at a time. By the time she reached her goal, her collection sat at around 1,200 copies. She posted updates to Reddit and strangers began sending her their own copies.
Past that number is where the collection actually stopped, even though it was supposed to end at 1,000.
The Screening That Wasn’t Much Fun
Adelaide marked the occasion by hosting a screening of the film at the Fargo Theater. She had never before seen it, and she did not hold it in high regard.
The Problem of Getting Rid of Them
Adelaide moved from Fargo to Minneapolis and found herself without enough room for all her possessions. When she attempted to sell them herself, she abandoned that plan. She then chose to put copies of the movie into the city’s Little Free Libraries instead.
Adelaide rode her longboard through the city, carrying DVDs to distribute at 19 Little Free Libraries. At times she would leave behind anywhere from 20 to 30 copies inside a single box. She said she made sure the boxes were clean and got rid of “garbage flyers” when needed.
A Queer Art Installation
A name has been given to the project, and Adelaide calls it a “100% queer art installation.”.
What Adelaide Said About the Community
Adelaide had her own take on the whole matter, and she put it plainly: “The community’s been through a lot here, but it’s also a loving and caring community that really needs a good smile every once in a while. This was the perfect place to do it.”
The Reaction So Far
Apart from some early uncertainty, the trick was generally received with laughter. Adelaide herself calls the undertaking a “100% queer art installation.”.
