Minecraft Live just wrapped, and the game has announced a whole new dimension, a sequel, and a bunch of new ways to build your own worlds. The headline act is The Sift, a new realm that is the first dimension added to the game in 15 years. It arrives alongside Dungeons II, new ice caves, and a Switch 2 release date. Here is what actually landed.
Dungeons II Gets a Sequel
The spin-off that worked — Dungeons — is getting a sequel. Dungeons II is due out on September 29, and the reveal showed off a new art style, bigger interconnected levels, and a whole new story centered on the Deep Dark and Ancient Cities. The Warden gets a mention in that story.
The game keeps the core formula but adds jumping, armor split into four pieces, and talismans for passives. Levels are larger and connected, letting players pick their path instead of just selecting missions from an over-map. The game feels less linear than the original.
The Sift Arrives
The Sift is the biggest news. It is the first new dimension in 15 years, since The End appeared in 2011. The game added The Nether in 2010, then The End in 2011, and nothing since. Now The Sift breaks that silence.
The dimension comes with its own biomes, mobs, and activities for players. It also appears in Dungeons II before the main game.
The biggest detail so far is that it will feature blue bunnies. Beyond that, there is not a lot of detail yet.
Ice Caves and Frozen Zombies
The ice caves are a big deal for regular players. They extend the cold biomes and spawn rarely in the underground. They are ore-heavy, easy sources of ice, and full of glowing ice crystals. The frozen zombie throws ice balls and can freeze players if they melee enough.
Players can throw those ice balls back, at each other, or at the zombies themselves. They also craft freezing potions. The crystals work as a light source and are naturally decorative. Seasoned players are already thinking about how to farm ice zombies by exposing a vanilla zombie to powdered snow.
Creative Tools and Sound Packs
The platform is changing to make player-created content more involved and more accessible. New tools are coming for both newcomers and professional creators.
There will also be a whole new set of sound effects packs on the Marketplace, letting players change how everything sounds in the base game or in their own creations. These arrive later this year, but no specific date was given. Expect to pay up, since they sit on the Marketplace.
Switch 2 Date Confirmed
Minecraft is finally coming to Switch 2 on October 27, which happens to be the writer’s birthday. The port brings prettied-up graphics more familiar to Xbox and PS5 players.
What Comes Next
The Sift is the least explained of the announcements, but it is the biggest. After The Overworld, The Nether, and The End, nothing happened for so long. The Sift’s arrival is going to be a huge deal for players.
The order of events matters:
- Dungeons II launches on September 29.
- The Sift appears in Dungeons II.
- The Sift arrives in the main game next year.
- Ice caves spawn underground now.
- Switch 2 version lands on October 27.
The ice caves and the frozen zombie already have players talking about farming and crafting. The blue bunnies in The Sift are a detail worth watching.
This is a packed slate. Dungeons II gives the game a new adventure, The Sift gives it a new frontier, and the ice caves give players a reason to dig deeper. The Switch 2 release finally closes a gap that has lasted for years.
The Sift is the headline, and it deserves to be. After 15 years without a new dimension, the game has earned its biggest announcement in a long time.
