On TikTok, Cat shared her account of an ex-partner who had cheated on her, and the post has since drawn a great deal of attention. As of publication, the video has amassed 8.7 million views and more than 2,400 comments. It has also turned into a focal point for a broader conversation about the language used to describe former romantic partners.
The Breakup
Six months prior to posting the video, Cat found out that her boyfriend had left her and hooked up again with his ex. Over the course of their relationship, he kept talking badly about his previous partner. He told Cat that she was abusive while they were together.
One morning, she discovered he had blocked her on his social media accounts. He offered neither an explanation nor closure before vanishing from her life. Later, Cat learned he had returned to his ex by making a new account and sneaking into his Instagram profile.
Her devastation stemmed from believing everything her ex had told her about his former girlfriend. She also described a very low period after the breakup, during which she had thoughts of suicide.
Cat said she did not reach out to her ex for the next six months, because she felt giving herself distance was the right way to work through the breakup. She also said she expected him to get back in touch with her eventually.
The Revenge Idea
Cat claims that during that period, she considered how to make him feel guilty over how he had ended their relationship. She says her thinking eventually turned toward a drastic plan: pretending that she had died.
A variety of responses came from viewers after the video was posted. A few people backed Cat’s idea that extreme dislike for a former partner may actually point to lingering emotions that haven’t been worked through. One person left a comment saying, “This is totally true!!! If he talks bad about his ex then he still cares !!!!”
Some disagreed with the approach. A distinct writer cautioned Cat against retaliating against her former partner. That person wrote, “Girl just move on. Never revenge or make him feel guilty. Just leave and live your life as best you could and this is the real winner.”
Another person who responded also described a comparable encounter. Here is what she wrote: “You are so strong! He did me the same, he was almost married and I didn’t know. I haven’t healed even now after a year. . . I made another insta account and that’s how I found out ’cause he blocked me everywhere.”
What Cat Learned
Cat pointed to what she learned from the experience about how people speak about their exes. She argued that constant expressions of hatred, disgust, or contempt toward an ex do not always signal that someone has moved on.
“Indifference is the opposite of love. Hate is not. So if he’s talking about his ex filled with hate . . . there’s something fishy,” she said.
