Troye Sivan Says He’s ‘Happiest’ in the ‘Orbit of a Woman’: ‘I’m So Comfortable in That World’

Troye Sivan says he’s happiest when he’s “in the orbit of a woman,” and he’s not afraid to say it. The pop star sat down with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe in New York to talk about his forthcoming fourth studio album She’s the Best, and he opened up about why the project showcases a feeling he says has followed him throughout his life.

“I’m so comfortable and kind of like my happiest, honestly, when I’m existing in the orbit of like a woman,” Sivan told Lowe. He elaborated: “Like the kind of safety and protection that I felt from women that I haven’t felt from men.”

Comfort in the Orbit of Women

Sivan pointed to several women who have occupied that orbit throughout his career. He mentioned his “duet with Ariana [Grande]” — which could reference their 2018 collaboration “Dance to This” or their remix on Eternal Sunshine’s “Imperfect for You.” He also cited his work with Lily-Rose Depp on The Idol, his SWEAT tour with Charli xcx, and his collaborations with Nicole Kidman.

“I am just so, so, so comfortable in that world,” he said.

That comfort zone became part of the album’s DNA. During the songwriting process for She’s the Best, Sivan realized the feeling had been a constant in his life since day one.

“During the songwriting process when we writing She’s the Best, I was like, oh, this has been, like, a constant in my life,” he said. “From day one, those are the people that have really had my back.”

The album’s DNA comes from that constant feeling. Sivan recognized it during the writing process and decided to let it shape the record.

The Party Ritual

The album arrives on Oct. 9. Its title track samples Madonna’s 2000 hit “Music.” Sivan’s recently released single “Party” also samples that track. The project features an eclectic roster of collaborators and appearances, including Charli xcx, Ian McKellen and Kidman.

But the story Sivan told Lowe isn’t just about the album. It’s about a teenage ritual that still defines him.

“I would get ready in like five minutes at home early and then go and just like, watch the girls get ready,” he recalled. “We would just like talk and hang out and whatever, and it was always so much more fun than the parties.”

Boys Who Were Homophobic

The contrast between those two worlds is stark. Sivan said he would arrive at the parties only to encounter boys being “homophobic.”

That sense of belonging now threads through She’s the Best. The album is the sound of a man who has spent his whole life finding his people — and finally admitting it.
