Back 4 Blood: A Famous Name, a Card Deck, and 12 Cleaners

Back 4 Blood review: Turtle Rock's Left 4 Dead successor brings 12 Cleaners, a clever card system and an AI Game Director, but the roster drags it down. 7.9/10.

Back 4 Blood: A Famous Name, a Card Deck, and 12 Cleaners

Back 4 Blood arrived on October 12, 2021, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC (Microsoft Windows), Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, and it carries the weight of a famous name without quite escaping it. Turtle Rock Studios built the Left 4 Dead games, and Warner Bros. Games published this one as a spiritual successor. The pitch is a four-player co-op shooter against the Ridden, and the pitch mostly holds.

The Cleaners and the Devil Worm

A parasite called the Devil Worm infects most of humanity and turns it into undead mutants. One year into the outbreak, survivors called Cleaners defend Fort Hope, a settlement in fictional Finleyville, Pennsylvania.

The roster runs to 12: Walker, a United States Army Ranger veteran and the group’s de facto leader; Chris, the eldest Cleaner, nicknamed “Mom” for her maternal attitude; Holly, a brash fighter who wields a baseball bat named Dotty; Evangelo, an optimistic recruit; Hoffman, a socially awkward survivalist and conspiracy theorist; Seo-yeon, nicknamed “Doc” for being the group’s medic and scientific expert; Jim, an experienced hunter and marksman; Karlee, a cynical lone wolf; Heng, a survivalist and chef at heart; Sharice, a former firefighter; “Prophet” Dan, a protector for “the light’s chosen”; and Tala, a former cult member of the children of the worm.

The campaign sends the team from Evansburgh to Fort Hope, then to a mine, a police station and a crashed military cargo plane, before they extract Doctor Rogers, the scientist behind the chemical weapon T-5. They then travel to an abandoned research and quarantine center holding a mass grave that breeds new mutant variants.

Cards, Copper and the Game Director

The Card System is the best idea here. Before each level players build a deck that shifts health, damage and stamina, while the AI Director plays Corruption cards against them — extra enemies, fog, bigger hordes. An in-game currency called Copper buys upgrades and items.

The Game Director is constantly adjusting to player actions, ensuring exciting fights, extreme gameplay diversity, and tougher legions of Ridden – including mutated boss types up to 20 feet tall.

That system gives Back 4 Blood its own identity. The eight-person Swarm mode, where four Cleaners fight four player-controlled Ridden, is thinner, and it is the part of the package that will empty out first.

Where the Fear Sits

The shooting is solid and the co-op demands real teamwork, which is exactly what the Left 4 Dead lineage promised. The problem is that the inheritance is the selling point.

Twelve Cleaners with preset abilities is a bigger cast than this campaign can make anyone care about, and the Ridden are memorable as a horde rather than as individuals.

Back 4 Blood is at its best when the Director turns a quiet room into a disaster, and at its weakest when it asks you to remember which Cleaner has which perk. The card deck is the mechanic worth watching; the hero roster is noise. The campaign’s late turn — weakening the Abomination with a T-5 payload before the helicopter crash kills Rogers, then finishing the fight on the ground — shows Turtle Rock still knows how to stage a boss. It just buries that craft under a dozen heroes nobody asked for.
