Lemmo 3 Puts a Semi-Solid State Battery Inside a Cargo Bike

A German e-bike maker reveals the Lemmo 3, one of the first to carry a semi-solid state battery promising fewer explosions.

German e-bike maker Lemmo has unveiled the Lemmo 3, which it says is among the first electric bicycles in the world to feature a semi-solid state battery. The company calls the model a premium, step-through longtail cargo design, and it is being pitched as an eSUV for everyday commuting rather than weekend trail riding.

Safety is what sets semi-solid state batteries apart from standard lithium-ion cells. Their gel-like design keeps the risk of thermal runaway down, so the battery is much less likely to start a fire while plugged in overnight at home or work. Even if the battery gets punctured in a crash, the electrolyte remains stable.

The Battery Inside the Lemmo 3

The Lemmo 3 packs a massive 960Wh battery, promising up to 180km (110 miles) of range. By choosing semi-solid state chemistry, Lemmo claims the battery is 20 percent smaller and lighter than a standard cell while still offering 30 percent longer lifespan.

Since the battery comes off, it can be used again later. It supplies enough power to run AC appliances up to 1000W and USB-C devices up to 66W after you reach your destination. This is much like what Cake offered with its now-discontinued Osa.

What the Semi-Solid State Battery Means

Compared to conventional lithium-ion cells, semi-solid state batteries mark a leap forward. Their gel-like electrolyte is what sets them apart, delivering higher energy density while also lowering the risk of thermal runaway.

A semi-solid state cell has its gel composition locked into a more stable form, which greatly reduces the chances of thermal runaway occurring. That stability also helps protect against damage during a crash. Should the battery be punctured, the electrolyte stays calm instead of reacting badly.

Range, Weight, and Dimensions

With the battery fitted, the bike tips the scales at 39kg, which works out to 86 pounds. The 5kg battery itself, or 11 pound, is lighter than the rest of the frame, which keeps the total weight from becoming too much to handle.

The bicycle follows a longtail design, so its rear section stretches past the rider to provide additional room for cargo. This construction suits tasks involving:

  • Goods
  • Children
  • Tools

A quick-adjust saddle and handlebar come standard on this bike, so it can be shared among several riders without needing an adjustment tool. The design accommodates adults ranging from 155cm (5 feet 1 inch) up to 195cm (6 feet 5 inches) in height, spanning a broad range of adult sizes.

The wide tires come with a 24-inch front wheel and a 20-inch rear wheel, which is smaller. That combination creates a stable, planted feeling when the bike is moving fast.

The Motor and Its Smart Features

The Lemmo 3 uses a rear-hub motor. In the US, it is rated at 750W; in Canada, it is 500W; and in Europe, it is 250W. The motor delivers up to 90Nm of torque, which is enough to move heavy loads or surmount hills.

There is AI baked into the system. The motor and e-derailleur combine data from a variety of sensors to “feed an adaptive Al model that selects the optimal gear in real time, creating a natural, responsive, and effortless ride.” That sounds expensive to fix when the drivetrain eventually needs servicing.

An automatic shifting gearbox with 3 speeds and a belt drive can be paired with the motor.

The Rest of the Package

A fully integrated lighting system is built into the bike, featuring turn signals and brake lights. It also includes a 3.5-inch touch screen along with a USB-C port for charging your phone.

The software stays current thanks to OTA updates. A rear-facing radar warns of vehicles coming up behind you. And when you pull a single brake lever, hydraulic pressure stops both wheels at once.

The security features cover several elements: embedded frame locks, battery locks, and GPS / LTE tracking.

Accessories and the Load Capacity

MIK HD accessories now work with Lemmo’s longtail, a pairing that covers a broad selection of child seats, bags, and boxes designed to attach to the rear rack.

A total weight of 200kg (441lb) is what the bike can carry, divided so that 80kg (176lbs) rests at the back and 20kg (44lbs) sits up front. This gives riders a fair amount of carrying room, even if the heaviest possible load is shared between both racks.

Reserving the Lemmo 3

The Lemmo 3 already has a teaser page up on Kickstarter that says “launching soon” for the EU, UK, US, and Canada. You can reserve it now for a refundable deposit of €39.90, which locks you into tax-exclusive pricing of €1,890 (or about $2,155).

According to the company, the retail price is expected to rise well above €3,390, which is over $3,800. First deliveries through Lemmo are being targeted for April 2027.

What This Means for Buyers

Built for people who need a dependable, safe daily ride, the Lemmo 3 is a premium product. Its semi-solid state battery is the standout feature, though the whole package covers everything from the smart shifting to the accessory compatibility.

This cargo bike is being sold as an eSUV, much like the Amflow TL Carbon I reviewed. Despite its weight and full suspension, it should prove more comfortable for daily commuting — to daycare, work, and stores — than it would be on weekend single tracks.

Another useful feature of the battery is its capacity to power household appliances, which turns the bike into a second tool once you reach your destination.

The Bottom Line

The Lemmo 3 is a serious piece of equipment. It comes at a high price, it is heavy, and it packs considerable technology. The semi-solid state battery, however, is genuinely new, and the safety advantages it offers are real.

For anyone who rides a bike to work and has cargo to carry, this product is worth keeping an eye on. The company’s commitment to bringing it to market is evident from the teaser page, though the April 2027 delivery window means it will be some time before it arrives.

It is still unknown whether the cost will reach the full amount set for selling.
