Abbott Elementary Review: A Well-Made Sitcom With a Thin Premise

Abbott Elementary, the ABC sitcom created by Quinta Brunson, follows a group of Philadelphia public school teachers trying to educate children despite a broken system. The show premiered on December 7, 2021, and ran for six seasons through April 22, 2026. It stars Brunson as Janine Teagues, a second-grade teacher at the underfunded Abbott Elementary, where most staff quit after two years.

The ensemble cast includes Tyler James Williams as Gregory Eddie, Janelle James as Ava Coleman, Lisa Ann Walter as Melissa Schemmenti, Chris Perfetti as Jacob Hill, Sheryl Lee Ralph as Barbara Howard, and William Stanford Davis as Mr. Johnson. Melissa Schemmenti has questionable connections with local figures that she uses to help the school. Jacob Hill is a sixth-grade history teacher who tries to help Janine with her plans to improve Abbott. Barbara Howard is a religious kindergarten teacher and a mother figure to Janine.

Mr. Johnson is the school’s eccentric janitor, overqualified and talented. The show’s humor comes from the contrast between the staff’s passion and the district’s indifference.
