Apple TV Posts Its Biggest Weekly Viewing Numbers Yet, Crediting ‘Mayday’, ‘Ted Lasso’ And Emmy-Pushed ‘Widow’s Bay’ And ‘Pluribus’

Apple TV hits all-time highs in viewership with Mayday, Ted Lasso, and post-Emmy bumps for Widow's Bay and Pluribus.

Apple TV has had its most successful week ever, though the company cannot say with certainty how many viewers tuned in.

On Monday, the streamer reported that its audience reached an all-time high for the week of September 14, up 67% from the same week last year. The achievement follows a record-breaking 2026 Emmys, during which Apple TV claimed 28 awards — 29 if you include the commercials category. It marks the most wins for any platform this year, and the company calls it the biggest weekly viewership in its seven-year history.

Apple TV has not given real viewer counts. It has pointed to gains over time, including year-over-year and week-over-week rises, along with standings from Luminate and minute totals from Nielsen. These outside measures form the basis of the company’s argument, even though each one measures something quite distinct.

The Shows Behind The Surge

The surge was driven by three shows. Mayday, the Cold War buddy comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh, debuted straight-to-streaming on September 4 and became Apple TV’s biggest film debut in 18 days. In the U.S., it opened at No. 1 on Luminate’s September 4-10 weekly rankings with 8.7M views, then fell to No. 2 in Week 2.

Apple reports that Widow’s Bay, which took home 14 Emmy Awards — the largest haul for any comedy series in a single season — saw its audience swell by 280% week-over-week following the ceremony. The freshman horror comedy led in ten countries:

  1. the U.S.
  2. UK
  3. Canada
  4. Australia
  5. Brazil
  6. Mexico
  7. Germany
  8. India
  9. Poland
  10. Spain

According to Apple, Pluribus climbed 200% week-over-week following the ceremony, making it the second-biggest Emmy winner with six statuettes, including Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Rhea Seehorn.

Luminate Confirms Some Of It

Luminate data backs up the claims for Widow’s Bay and Mayday. For the week of September 4-10, Widow’s Bay was outside the Top 50. For the week of September 11-17 — the first three days after the Emmys, where Widow’s Bay was crowned Outstanding Comedy Series — it jumped to No. 13.

Since the sci-fi drama from Emmy winner Vince Gilligan wrapped its run in December, Pluribus’s increase was likely off a small base. Widow’s Bay, starring Emmy winner Matthew Rhys, launched in late April, Pluribus did not reenter Luminate’s Top 50 arrived the week of September 11.

The spy thriller Slow Horses made a comeback. After missing the prior week, it returned to Luminate’s Top 50 at No. 43 for the week of September 11-17. The show posted a rare season-to-season viewership increase, with Season 6 up 25% over Season 5, based on the first seven days of release. It remains Apple TV’s No. 1 UK title.

Nielsen Is Coming

The figures for the week of September 14 will not be available until this Thursday, because Nielsen’s reporting is running late. In the most recent report, covering the week of September 7, there was a single Apple TV title among the overall Top 10, and it was Ted Lasso, which sat at No. 7 with 734 million minutes viewed.

Nielsen’s rankings are built around total watched time rather than view counts, which puts comedies at a disadvantage. That particular metric works against a service like Apple TV, which leans heavily on comedy programming.

The show Ted Lasso played a large part in the increase from one year to the next. Its fourth season had trouble with its writing at first but found its footing again by the second half, and it has become the most watched seasons for a returning Apple TV comedy over the first 54 days, according to the streamer.

iCloud+ Expansion

The gains from one year to the next might also owe something to a wider rollout of iCloud+. On September 15, Apple TV access was rolled out at no extra charge for paid iCloud+ subscribers across more than 170 countries, expanding on iCloud+’s existing offerings.

What We Know

Metric Week of September 14 Year-Over-Year
Total viewership Largest ever +67%
Mayday debut Biggest film debut in 18 days N/A
Widow’s Bay viewership +280% week-over-week N/A
Pluribus viewership +200% week-over-week N/A
Slow Horses viewership +25% season-to-season N/A

A record week for Apple TV followed a record night at the Emmys. The numbers tracked the excitement, with the company’s biggest broadcast evening setting new highs. Whether that success continues remains to be seen.

Apple TV’s reach has grown thanks to iCloud+’s expansion, and now the question is whether that forward motion can continue after the ceremony ends.

A week that shattered its own records is worth celebrating for the streamer, at least for now. The value of those records rests on which metrics you believe. Apple TV relies on Luminate and Nielsen. Everyone else will need to sit tight until the numbers arrive.
