Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout released in Japan in September 2019 for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Microsoft Windows, then North America in October and the rest of the world in November. It is the twenty-first main entry in the Atelier series and the first of the Secret storyline. Seven outlets averaged it to 7.7 out of 10.

Reisalin Stout and Kurken Island

Ryza is a girl on Kurken Island who wants an adventure. She sneaks to the mainland by boat with her friends Lent Marslink and Tao Mongarten, meets the merchant’s daughter Klaudia Valentz, and the four are ambushed by a monster. The alchemist Empel Vollmer and his bodyguard Lila Decyrus save them. Ryza, Tao and Lent talk the pair into taking them as apprentices, and the old cottage they restore in the forest becomes Ryza’s atelier.

That setup does the work the series needed. Ryza is not a prodigy handed a workshop; she earns one, and the game lets the island stay small and specific rather than opening onto a continent.

Alchemy on a Field of Elemental Nodes

Gathering happens in the field, and crafting means placing what you find onto a field of elemental nodes to discover recipes and make usable items. The collection system is redesigned: the items are the same, but different tools or actions are needed at collection points. New to the series is automated gathering and synthesis, for players more interested in everything else.

Combat keeps turns but runs time continuously while you give commands. Attacks build Action Points, spent on skills and special attacks or to raise the party’s Tactics Level for stronger abilities. The result is a fight that asks you to keep moving rather than settle in.

Bos Brunnen and the Gate to the Underworld

The back half turns on Bos Brunnen, Ryza’s estranged childhood friend, who conspires with his father Moritz to falsely implicate Empel and Lila and have them banished. The scheme fails, Bos flees, and the party chases him to a gate into the “Underworld.” There they find Kilo Shiness, an Oren like Lila, and learn the local water was stolen centuries ago by the ancient Klint Kingdom, which let the insectoid Philuscha ravage the land.

The release order, and what followed:

  1. Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout — 2019
  2. Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy — 2020 in Japan, 2021 elsewhere
  3. Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key — March 2023
Release Date
Japan (PlayStation 4, Switch, PC) September 2019
North America October 2019
Rest of the world November 2019
Anime by Liden Films July–September 2023
Atelier Ryza DX November 13, 2025

The Underworld reveal is where the game is weakest: a water theft from centuries ago explains the Philuscha, but the story reaches for it late and the island intrigue that carried the first half gets dropped. The alchemy loop is the part that lasts, and the automation option is the smartest addition here — it lets the crafting stay deep without forcing it on everyone.
