Netflix’s The Silent Sea opens on a dying planet. Earth is running out of drinkable water. Rationing is strict. A scientist named Song Ji-an joins a hand-picked crew bound for the Moon, and the mission is not what the briefing claims.

Balhae Station and the 117 Dead
The show comes from director Choi Hang-yong, who built it out of his own 2014 short film, The Sea of Tranquility. Writer Park Eun-kyo helped expand it to eight episodes. Netflix released all of them on December 24, 2021.
Song Ji-an, played by Bae Doona, has a personal stake. Her sister died at Balhae Station five years earlier, during an incident that killed 117 personnel. The circumstances are classified. The crew’s stated job is to retrieve a sample from the abandoned facility. The real job is something else.
The title comes from the Sea of Tranquility on the Moon. The show is mostly science fiction, but it folds in thriller and mystery as well.
Bae Doona, Gong Yoo and the Chain of Command
Bae Doona and Gong Yoo were cast in the lead roles in April 2020. Heo Sung-tae and Lee Moo-saeng officially joined in September 2020.
Gong Yoo plays Han Yun-jae, the team’s captain and a soldier for the space agency. Lee Joon plays Lieutenant Ryu Tae-seok of the Ministry of National Defense, who volunteers for the crew. Kim Sun-young plays Hong Ga-young. Lee Mu-saeng plays Gong Soo-hyuk. The rest of the roster includes Lee Sung-wook as Kim Hee-sun, Jung Soon-won as Gong Soo-chan, Choi Young-woo as Lee Ki-soo, Cha Rae-hyung as E1, Yoo Hee-je as E2, You Seong-joo as Mr. Hwang, and Kang Mal-geum as Song Won-kyung.
The cast is the show’s strongest asset. Bae carries the grief without announcing it. Gong Yoo plays the captain as a man following orders he has started to doubt.
What the Sample Actually Is
At the lunar facility, Song learns the higher-ups have floated half-truths and outright lies about the mission, the base, and the accident that wiped out the staff.
The sample turns out to be a new element. It looks like water. When it touches living cells, such as human blood, it multiplies like a virus.
Then the crew meets a violent superhuman girl on the station. She is immune to the effects of lunar water. Some members of the team have their own motives, and those motives lead to betrayal.
The premise does a lot of work. A substance that looks like the thing everyone is dying for, and behaves like the thing that kills them, is a clean idea. The show knows it.

Eight Episodes, One Mission
The season runs eight episodes, all released the same day. The mission is framed as a 24-hour operation. That clock is the show’s engine, and it mostly holds.
The series drew generally positive reviews from critics and audiences. That tracks with what is on screen: a confident production with a strong central performance and a mystery that keeps paying out.
What it does not do is move fast. The middle stretch spends time on crew politics that the show has already made clear. The betrayal thread is the weakest of the major ideas, because the show telegraphs it early and then waits.
What Holds Up and What Drags
The Silent Sea is a good show that could have been a great one. The lunar-water element is the best thing in it, a genuinely unsettling piece of science fiction that turns the crew’s survival instinct against them. The 117 dead at Balhae Station give the story weight that most streaming sci-fi never earns.
The sample turns out to consist of a new element that ostensibly looks like water, but multiplies like a virus when it comes in contact with living cells such as human blood.
What holds it back is pace. Eight episodes is the right length for this story, but the show does not always use them well. The mystery is strong enough to carry a tighter cut.
Still, Bae Doona and Gong Yoo make the mission worth taking. The Silent Sea is a solid entry in Netflix’s Korean sci-fi slate, and the kind of show that rewards patience more than it rewards attention.
