BMF is a slow-burn crime drama that treats the Black Mafia Family as a business study rather than a cautionary tale. The show follows Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory and Terry “Southwest T” Flenory, brothers who built a drug empire in southwest Detroit in the late 1980s and used it as a springboard into the hip-hop industry. It is based on their true story.
The show premiered on Starz on September 26, 2021, and ran for four seasons across 38 episodes before being canceled in October 2025. It was renewed for a second season on January 6, 2023, a third season on March 1, 2024, and a final season on June 6, 2025.

Big Meech and Southwest T
Lil Meech plays Big Meech, the charismatic leader whose vision pushed the operation past drugs into music. Da’Vinchi plays Terry “Southwest T” Flenory, the brother with the business sense that kept the enterprise running. Jerel Xavier Alston rounds out the core trio as Kevin Bryant.
The series casts its characters less as criminals than as entrepreneurs. Their loyalty to each other is the engine of the plot, and their eventual estrangement comes from that bond, not from external pressure. That framing sets BMF apart from other crime dramas that treat violence as the main event.
The Supporting Cast
The show added a steady stream of recurring and series regular talent across its run. Russell Hornsby and Steve Harris joined early, followed by Kash Doll in a recurring role. Demetrius Flenory Jr., Da’Vinchi, Michole Briana White, Ajiona Alexus, Eric Kofi-Abrefa and Myles Truitt came aboard in January 2021. Snoop Dogg, La La Anthony and Serayah joined in March 2021, and Sean Michael Gloria was cast in September 2021.
La La Anthony was promoted to series regular in March 2022, while Kelly Hu became a new series regular. Christine Horn and Leslie Jones joined as recurring cast members for the second season. 2 Chainz and Ne-Yo were added for the third season.
Love, Betrayal and Thug-Capitalism
The show is described as a story about love, betrayal and thug-capitalism in pursuit of the American dream. That description fits the tone of the series, which spends more time on deals and family dinners than on gunfights. The drama is about power, not action.
