In Ireland, a community held a barbecue that came with bouncy castles for children to enjoy. Instead, they ended up with an outbreak of MRSA, the superbug that refuses to disappear.

In autumn 2025, neighbors came together with food and sweets, and three bouncy castles were put out for the afternoon. Some 120 people turned up, and roughly half of them were children and teens.

How the Outbreak Started

The Rare Strain Behind It

The genomic analysis showed that the outbreak stemmed from a rare strain of MRSA that produces a toxin known as Panton–Valentine leukocidin, or PVL. This toxin is able to destroy immune cells and trigger inflammation, and it is frequently associated with necrotic lesions.

The fact that PVL is rare in MRSA infections makes this particular strain particularly worrisome, since the toxin tends to cause more severe symptoms than usual.

This week, the journal Eurosurveillance published the findings from an outbreak investigation. Of the total 48 cases identified, 33 received treatment from their usual doctor while 15 turned to emergency care.

The PVL toxin is the difference-maker. It destroys white blood cells, which weakens the body’s ability to fight off the infection. That’s why systemic symptoms like fever, nausea, and vomiting were reported in 12 cases.

Before and after each time people use them, bouncy castles need to be cleaned thoroughly. It is wise for those who arrange events to prepare a plan for keeping things clean and free from dirt.

The lesson here is straightforward: a pleasant day spent bouncing around ended up becoming a serious health problem because nobody took the time to clean the bouncy castles.
